Pumpers: how long does it take you to pump?

I have 3 sessions of 20 minutes at work and I don't think that's enough.

I think I might be having supply issues and I'm using Fenugreek and mother's milk tea.  I think that helps, but I'm also trying to nurse and pump as often as possible.  When DD nurses she'll nurse between 40-50 minutes.  From what I understand, to keep up a good supply you need to empty your breasts at each nursing/pumping session.  I don't think 20 minutes per pumping session is working for me : (

  • can you extend just another 5 min? Lots of women seem to get that 2nd letdown at 25 minutes.

  • I get 2 or 3 letdowns w/in 20 minutes but sometimes the seem awfully short.
  • I usually pump 15-20 min. Seems to empty things...usually I stop producing around 11 min., and sometimes get a second (but VERY short lived) letdown at 14:40 or so, and/or 17 min. I've also found that the more I pump (meaning, the longer I've been doing this) the faster my let down comes and the sooner I stop producing, even though I'm making the same amount. Used to take me 25 min. to empty.

  • I never time myself, but I "empty" myself with a pump after about 10 minutes. I always let the pump continue to go for about 5 min after the last drop though. Then I hand express since they say pumps don't get out the entire amount like breastfeeding does. I probably do this for another 5 minutes a breast, really massaging it out.

I've been doing this about a week now and seeing that I've gotten up to about an extra 1/2 oz per pumping. It's not a second letdown, I've never gotton on of those, even when I tried to "power pump" for an hour straight, so who knows.

  • I pump for 10 min 3x at work.  I have a bit of a forceful let down though but I've read 20-25min is ideal.  Maybe you could also pump before work or right after to increase supply?  I eat oatmeal to help with my supply, not sure how much it helps on a regular basis but it's helped with supply dips before.  Have you tried doing breast compressions while pumping?

  • I pump 5 times per day - first and last pump of the day are 20ish minutes and the rest are 15 minutes.  I'm empty after all the pumps, with the exception of the first pump of the day.  I could just keep pumping and pumping and pumping in the morning, and it would probably never stop.  Unfortunately, I have to get to work so I have to put an end to it after 20-25 minutes
