So, what to do for middle of the night wakings?

We tried Ferber with mild success.  DS will put himself to sleep initially.  However, when he wakes at night he will not settle down until I go in and get him.  I tired the graduated check-ins.  I made it 1.5 hours before I gave in.  I normally will go in, bring him to bed with me and then attempt to put him back in his bed about an 1 hour later. Sometimes, it works, sometimes not. I figured out that part of the problem was the temperature in his room.  I think it was getting too cold at night. Since, I started closing the vent at night, he's been sleeping a little better.  Any suggestions on how to get him to actually STTN?  He isn't waking to eat or play, he just wants to be held?  And usually, it has to be me.  If DH goes in, he freaks out completely.

  • When he wakes in the middle of the night, try holding him in his room until he falls back asleep. Then start just picking him up briefly, putting him back in his bed & rubbing his back until he sleeps. Hopefully after that you can just go in & rub his back w/o having to pick him up. We did this w/DS to get him used to not coming out of his room when he woke up at night. Eventually he would soothe himself if he woke up. It took a little while but worked. Good Luck!

  • Try the book the Sleep Easy Solution.  Worked for us!  Also, I found that doing check-ins when CIO only made DC freak out more, he would go back to sleep faster when I did not go into his room at all.

  • I don't take DS out of his room at night if I can help it. There is a rocking chair in there and we rock if he wakes up and needs help going back to sleep.
