Blackout curtains/shades necessary?

Hi Ladies,

I am working on the nursery and realized that our baby's room just has mini blinds and we live in NYC, so some light still gets in.

Are you all putting something on the windows so you can "black out" the nursery for sleep time?

2nd time mommies - is this a must?

Thanks!

  • We've never had them.  DS #1 has been a great sleeper.  We just have a sheer lace curtain over his window (super tall old farmhouse windows), and he's done just fine.

  • I used curtains or blinds at night but leave them open for nap time. You want the baby to be able to sleep in a variety of conditions/ lighting other wise you'll be trapped in your house and vacations/traveling will be difficult.
  • I will not be blacking out the nursery.  I want the baby to be able to sleep during the day time - anywhere.  I am afraid if I put him down for naps in the dark he will not adapt easily to naps when it's light out.

  • will depend on your kid I think. DD has always beena  super aware sleep-fighter so blackouts and white noise (for naps only) has been very key for us. She is a great night sleeper and sleeps in until 7-8am and I think keeping the light out helps that. We will do it again for next DC because it has been so great for DD but I suppose this baby could be the type to sleep anywhere and not need it. DD is very picky -ONLY in her crib no matter how tired she is - she would never sleep in a stroller (past 4-5 months) or anywhere else where stuff is going on around her.
  • I would agree with some of the PPs--dont' make the nursery pitch black. You want the baby to be able to sleep in other conditions.

We have regular roman shades and it is fine.

We have taken our Dd to so many places and she can usually sleep anywhere in her pack n play.

Ditto.  1st time mommy here, but have worked in a lot of day cares which are pretty bright during naptimes.  The kids who get accustomed to various sleeping conditions sleep much better than the kids who only sleep with the same conditions every day.  I also noticed this with my nephew as well that when they switched homes he wasn't able to sleep during nap time any more because he wasn't used to sleeping with any amount of light coming into the room.  They had a difficult time trying to help him readjust.
