How often does your older baby nurse?

DS is 13 months old, and he nurses every night before bed.  He often wakes up once during the night, although not always, and we BF then, too.  On the weekends (I work FT), he nurses twice during the day, before naps.

Just wondering if this is pretty typical.

I am starting to think about weaning, but I'm not really there yet.  It's actually kind of hard for me to even type that I am starting to think about weaning.  I just re-read the kellymom page on the benefits of BF past one to remind myself of all of the good things.  (I realize this paragraph is not related to my actual question, but it's the first time I've ever admitted that I am thinking about weaning.  And I am kind of sad to admit it's mostly because DS seems so "old" when I know he's not.)

Re: How often does your older baby nurse?

  • At 13 months DD was nursing before bed, 2 times in the middle of the night, and once (before her nap) on the weekends.  She was down to only one nap at that point ... I'm sure if she had still been taking two naps she would have nursed before both.  Your nursing schedule sounds pretty normal, to me!

I think weaning is hard, emotionally, whenever you do it.  It felt like such a big part of my relationship with DD and it was a huge change, you know?  Don't stress yourself out over it but do give yourself time to process your feelings.

  • At 13 months DD was nursing when she woke up in the morning, at lunch (if I was working) or before nap (on weekends), after work (sometimes after nap on weekends too), before bed, and usually 1-2x a night.  That's 5-6x a day, which I think is pretty typical. My min bfing goal was 2 years but I wanted to follow CLW.

  • DD is almost 16 months. During the work week, she nurses when she gets up in the morning, when we get home in the evening and before bed.  We bedshare, so sometimes she will nurse once during the night.  Weekends are almost the same, although she nurses before naps - once, sometimes twice.
  • at 13 months, DD nursed before bed, during the night about twice, then in the morning.  on the weekends she might nurse 1-2x, but often not at all.

At almost 21 months, DD nurses at night and morning only.  she will nurse in the middle of the night if she wakes from teething, illness, etc.

  • DS1 nursed about every 3 hours round the clock at 13 months.  DS2 nursed more often than that.
  • I nurse my DS before nap, after snack in late afternoon, before bed, and once or twice at night/early morning if he wakes up.  This 4-5x a day.  I still pump at work so I can nurse for nap time on the weekends.
  • DS BF anywhere from 6 to 11 times a day.
  • Thanks, everyone!  Sounds like every LO is different -- shocking, right?  I appreciate your responses.
