Does walking really count as exercise?

I am working and am too tired at night to go to the gym. If I walk for 30 min. at lunch, does that count? Will extra walking help in any way? Normally I wouldn't consider that as exercising because I am not out of breath/sweating.

  • Sure it counts. I wouldn't stroll, but if you're walking at a brisk pace it will get your heart rate up.
  • I would say it is better than doing nothing.  I walk home 2-3 times a week and it takes me 1 1/2-2 hours.  I get much better exercise from going to the gym for an hour but I like walking during the summer.
  • I walk every day, even if it's just a short one.  Then WHEN I CAN I squeeze in a gym visit.

    Hahaha! We totally think alike... And if walking doesn't count, then I'm in trouble ; )  Oh, and sex counts too!

  • I  say yes! I lost 130lbs and the only exercise I did was walk Monday - Friday.

  • that is the only excercise i get so i count it.   i don't even get 30 minutes in-but walk to and from day care or to the park.  figure every little bit helps.
  • Of course it counts!  Walking is great exercise!

    Not sure what your normal workout is like but my Dr. recommended/preferred exercise for preggos are low impact activities like walking, swimming and/or yoga.  I prefer walking to yoga and I don't have easy access to a pool. 

    You do not have to be out of breathe or sweating to get good exercise.  If you need a bit more challenge walk faster, take stairs and/or go for a hike.

    Sex definitely counts but unfortunately most people aren't having enough of it to increase their fitness. + I love your little badge about a clean house being a sign of a wasted life.  I have the same thing on a magnet on my fridge.
