Last meal b4 u checked into the hospital?(to deliver baby)

As some of us know, once you check in the hospital, they won't let you eat anything, not even water. They'll only give you ice chips. :(

Ppl are asking me what would I want to try to be sure to eat before we head out to the hospital and I'm like, hmmmm..... I dunno?

With Oona I had my contractions at 2am and didn't leave for the hospital til 5am (or was it 8am? don't remember) and I don't think I cared to eat anything! But I do know that I was severely thirsty while I was in labor! One friend told me she made sure her DH got her an In-&-Out burger before she checks in the hospital! haha!

---------

What would you want to eat before you head out for the hospital?

Or, what did you eat before you headed out?

  • Maybe I am the only one but my nurses let me eat. I had yogurt and fruit, plus a protien bar all while in intense labor. I think they cut me off from food at after 15 hours of labor when they started talking c-section. My moto would be don't eat anything you won't want to throw back up!

  • Hmmm, once I started having contractions, I didn't want anything to eat! DH made me try to eat a dry piece of toast and after about 5 bites, I threw up!

Before I started having contractions, I had gone to dinner with a girlfriend and had a yummy burrito! Which wasn't so yummy the 2nd time around. ewwwww.

  • I was also able to eat in the hospital...I made sure to run it by my OB first and she was fine with it as long as everything was going well. That said, I didn't get a chance to eat there since we stayed home until pretty late in the game. I grazed all day while laboring at home, though nothing too exciting. A small bowl of oatmeal, some breaded chicken, a few pieces of toast and yogurt smoothies.

  • I had a sandwich for lunch. Afterwards things started happening really fast and I was on the 5-1-1 (5 min apart contractions, lasting for a mn+) by mid-afternoon. I didn't even think of food after that point.
  • Hmm, I haven't thought about this. I love indian but when I eat it I'm full for a very long time, maybe I'll have indian if they are open.

  • This is a really good question. I'm having a scheduled c-section, so I'm not sure what the protocol will be.

I'm on board with that not eating anything you don't want to throw back up thing, though.

I'm also REALLY looking forward to caffeine and champagne. I'm going to miss my Christmas Wrapping Cocktails that I drink while wrapping  gifts and watching cheesy holiday movies every year...sigh... Wink

  • What?! they let you eat?! Dang..... I guess kaiser was being all strict with me! I remember seeing this one patient 9she wasn't pregnant) eating jello and i was like, dude, can I have some jello too? :o(

Hey - there's one item! I'll be stocking up on some jello in my fridge :)

We have Kaiser too and they were ok with it! I don't think they would be the ones to offer it, but if you speak up (especially ahead of time), they'll probably let you have a little something while you're there. I thought about it like an athletic event...you need to be able to provide your body with a little fuel so that you have enough energy to perform at your best.

  • I was told to eat something that was high in protein, but low in fat when I called L&D after my water broke.

First thing I could think of was scrambled eggs.  Nurse thought it was a great idea and reminded me that birth was messy & to avoid the toast, but soft egg was ideal.

So while DH loaded the truck, I labored over my pan of scrambled eggs & relished every bite.  Those were the best eggs & I haven't been able to reproduce them since.

  • I would not eat anything heavy. I didn't get a chance to eat before we left the house over to the hospital and I was starving. My mom did come to the hospital with a big bowl of won ton noodle soup and I had ate the whole bowl only to find out after the epi was in and I was good to go...I threw it all up. So yea...eat but keep it to a minimal Big Smile
  • Hmmm... I honestly don't remember! We had a dinner party the night my water broke, but the whole next day before I went to the hospital is a complete memory loss for me. It may have been a Luna bar or something since I had to check in at 11pm for induction, and probably wanted some little energy boost.

  • We stopped for lunch on teh way to the hospital for the induction (on the advice of my doula) and I think I had a tuna melt and a shake.

Since my induction lasted for.EVER, my OB said I was allowed to eat. He decided that carbs were best -- they gave me some energy but didn't stay in teh stomach long (like protein) so if we needed to do surgery he wasn't going to worry about it. I "feasted" on muffins, crackers, etc off and on for the four days I was in labor.  And he let me take a break to have a turkey sandwich one night.

After my cesarean, i wasn't allowed to eat until I passed gas.  I hadn't had proper food for days at that point and had nothing to pass.  So it was two more days before I got real food.  Way to go on getting a good start on the mothering, huh?  No real food while in labor for 4 days, surgery with pain meds after, and then no food for days after that.  No wonder it sucked!

By the time I was allowed food, even hospital food was the best thing I'd ever tasted.  The pancakes they served became my new favorite food.  And the simple cheese ravioli with marinara sauce.  Ahhh.  Food!

For a scheduled C Section they will tell you no food or drink after midnight.  If you end up with a later in the day section know that the true surgery rule is no food or drink 4 hours prior to surgery.  No one will tell you that but just in case your scheduled at say 1pm or something.  My nurses didn't even want to hear that I'd had a bit of water to take a pill in the morning (they gave me a look and repeated, you didn't have anything right?)

  • Once i hit my due date I started being very cautios about what I ate ... I didnt want to eat anything garlicky or too heavy because I was afraid of a) being stinky and b) throwing up. So vain, i know. I cant even remember what my 'last' meal was - thats how uneventful it was.?
  • I had just a little breakfast before we headed to hospital. (I was meant to only have a NST but ended up staying until they were born.) The night before I had my real, last meal--short ribs with something at a restaurant. They were SO yummy!!
  • skips prego pizza ... the night before. coffee the morning i was induced.

they cut me off of my vitiamin waters once the epi was put in !!

  • I was induced so I knew ahead of time when I'd be going in.  My OB told me to make sure to eat something with protein as well as some carbs since she wasn't sure how long I'd be there and she didn't want my sugars getting too low.  I had steak, mashed potatoes and asparagus.  It was delicious but I would warn against the asparagus since it makes your pee smell and you have to pee in that little hat on the toilet.  I totally forgot about the smelly pee issue until we were already at the hospital.

  • Mmm, I had the best "last" meal.  I had been a maternity leave for a week and was nice and relaxed, slept in, got myself as cute as possible and went out with DH, BF and boss/friend to Melting Pot fondue.  Ate all sorts of yummy fondue and chocolate fondue and mocktails.  That night I blissfully read in bed until pop, water broke!

My last worry free day, lol

  • We stopped at my favorite little Mexican place for dinner on our way into the hospital to be induced.  It was pretty funny actually, we both sat and ate dinner in silence I think sort of mortified/excited/scared/curious about what was to come.

  • I don't remember what I had for dinner the night before....my contractions sort of started around 5:30 pm on a Saturday.  I was up most of the night.  I remember I had a few saltine crackers around 3 am on Sunday.  I threw them up a few hours later.  :)  After that I didn't eat or drink again until after Miles was born around 6:25 pm on Sunday.
  • I was being induced in the morning so my last meal was waffles, bacon and some eggs. I went all out.

What would you want to eat before you head out for the hospital?

Or, what did you eat before you headed out?

My water broke in the middle of the night, but my contractions didn't start on their own, so I waited at home and was so nervous about the impending birth, I wasn't thinking about what food I wanted to eat. I think in the morning for breakfast I had toast and a bagel.
However, once I got to the hospital and I still wasn't contracting I got really hungry by lunch time, so I had my dh get me a chicken pesto toasted sandwich from Erik's Deli. Soo yummy.  I had no idea I wasn't suppose to eat, and my nurse freaked out on me when she saw me eating. I told her that I could be waiting till the next day to have the baby at the rate I was going, and I wasn't contracting so to please make an exception.  She called my midwife and had it cleared it with her that I could eat. I can't imagine not eating through an entire labor that lasts days!  That would be impossible, I'm sure. The woman would have to get strength for all that work from somewhere!

  • my last meal was a bowl of soup for lunch (12p). which i didn't even finish as i already wasn't feeling well and had no appetite.

contractions started getting stronger so went to the hosp at 3p and had Lucas at 6p!

i was allowed to eat after delivery (around 8p). i had a sandwich but i still did not have much appetite.
