I use one of those yellow sponges and put it in the bathtub in a few inches of water. I even did this when she had her umbilical cord and just kept her tummy dry. I love just using the $3 sponge b/c it doesn not take up a lot of room and it is so easy.

I just saw that your LO was born on my birthday...that's so exciting to me, because I have seriously NEVER met anyone with the same birthdate as me. Congrats!!
Apparently you can give newborns full baths with umbilical cord still on. Actually, when they bathed DD in the hospital they bathed her in the tub.
When I sponged bathed, I just layed a towel on my bed and had a pail of warm soap water and just wiped her down. DD likes bathing in her baby bathtub best.
We have this big spongy thing that you can set in a sink or on a countertop. We put it on the counter in the kitchen next to the sink and did the sponge bath thing. DH held him, I washed him. We only did that twice before his cord fell off and then we started using his tub in the same spot. He liked the tub the first time, he didn't like it at all last night though.
I just put LO on a towel on our living room sofa and washed her with the soft baby wash cloths (no soap, just water). I made sure not to tough the umbilical cord. Once it fell off I bathed her in her infant tub in our kitchen sink.
At first I used the baby bathtub and only filled it with a little water. I just took a washcloth and wiped him off. Now I use the baby bathtub in the big bathtub so I can crouch beside it. I fill it all the way so that he doesn't get too cold during the bath.
"You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast..."
I used a beach towel folded up and placed on the kitchen counter. This way I didn't have to bend over to get to him. They generally say you can switch them over to the tub when the cord comes off.
