Re: WTF?.........just lemme vent!

  • I'm sure it was just a senseless poll designed to give people who are bored something to do.

    Simmer down.

  • Loading the player...
  • LOL at big feet ;)  I think it is hilarious that anyone even gave her outfit a second look, considering that she is dressed just like any other mom would be that is at the Grand Canyon with her family.
  • Yikes! Calm down. Sure it is sexist, but people have always talked about the First Lady's clothing.

    Not racist.

...i think pple r so enraged that there are black pple in the "white house" that they will find anything to talk bad about !

WOW!  Did you seriously just read the race card into an article written by people with too much time on their hands about shorts?  I think you are way to overly-sensitive about this issue, and really need to calm down about this!

Nowhere did the article mention anything about race, and it really makes me mad when people try to blame other people's actions based on whether they are white, black, blue, purple, or pink.  They were bored and had nothing better to do.  Let's not read WAAAAYYYYYY too much into an article, mmkay?

  • I believe that it only became an "issue" because she is always seen as a very well dressed lady. She's been compared to previous fashion icon first ladies, such as Jackie O.  I think that it's only mentioned because, in comparison to her "normal" attire (what we usually see her in), this is odd and doesn't live up to her 'standards'...but those are just my thoughts. I honestly could not care less what she wore...

    This.

It really drives me crazy when people try to blame everything on someone's race.  Who cares what her race is?  It was a stupid poll.  I can promise there were plenty of stupid polls and stupid things said about Laura Bush... I wouldn't say they were said because she is Caucasian AT ALL.

I agree with PP, Michelle Obama has been praised for her classy fashion sense in the past, so people were just trying to pick on this incident because she isn't all dressed up.

Can I ask you a question?  Do you feel like everything has to do with race in every situation (for Hispanics, African Americans, Caucasians and others) or only when it involves African Americans?

I am not racist myself and know most people I know are not racist.  I teach and when it comes to helping my students I could care less what their race is (and I do have students from many backgrounds).  So for me, everything does not center around a person's race, religion or sexual orientation.

  • it has nothing to do with race. like pp said, the first lady's clothing is always a hot topic. quit playing the race card. obama got into the white house, didnt he? the u.s. has come a long way with racism and i really dont think an article on her shorts has to do with ANYTHING.

Apparently in the real world there is no such thing as grammar and spelling.

HAHAHAHA I am literally laughing out loud right now!  I live in New Orleans, where the population is 68% black, and 32% white/latino/asian, etc.  90% of the politicians are black, and blacks are the MAJORITY in NOLA.

So when I say it literally kills me when people pull the race card, i'm not kidding.  We deal with it all day everyday down here.

Not everything has to do with race, and when people have that attitude, it's no wonder there are so many sections of the country where people of different races really cannot get along.

It is not about race, it is about the content of a person's character, and how morally and ethically they live their life.  The color of their skin doesn't matter if they have a good heart and life their life the best they can.

I think You need to calm it down.  I'm also African American and understand that there's still many race issues that need to be addressed and dealt with in today?s society but how do you expect everyone else to get past it if YOU'RE making an unofficial fashion poll a race issue?

Please focus on your grammar and refrain from making this non-issue a racial one.

  • Westbank, and if you're in GA, I'm going to suppose you moved after Katrina, and were probably 15 at the time, and don't realize how much the dynamics of NOLA have changed since then.

So somewhere in New Orleans is an example of what you are talking about?  The thing is- everywhere is not that way... so everyone, everywhere in the U.S. does not always make everything about race.  In some places people might.  Not everywhere.

Yes  The issue was that no first lady has really ever worn short like that. I, too, think it's rediculous to critize her shorts, but it has NOTHING to do with race. I'm 100% Hispanic and I absolutely hate that thinking.

  • Ok, seriously? I'm a professor who specializes in stratification (including racial/ethnic stratification) for a primarily black audience. It makes me upset when a few people try to tie seemingly unrelated issues to race because it cheapens (and downplays) all of the serious racial issues we have in the U.S.

It's like me saying, "I was discriminated against because I'm a woman and we only had 3 stalls in the bathroom, just like the men, but everyone knows it takes us longer to pee!"  Ummm...ok, but whining about that makes people take REAL women's issues (like earning 81 cents on the dollar, doing the vast majority of the second shift labor even if we work full time, too, and being the overwhelming victims of partner violence) less seriously.

Even if, in your own head, this is only because Michelle Obama is black, is this really the hill you want to die on?

  • As I recall, Laura Bush was criticized for wearing the same dress as another guest at her holiday party.  Another time she was given grief because she wore a pants suit (or something too casual) to an important meeting with an international representative.  Let me guess... it was because she's black, right?  Oh wait...

I get tired of people who always try to play the race card.  I will never understand why some people search for things to complain about or walk around feeling sorry for themselves for reasons that make absolutely no sense.  Welcome to year 2009.  Might want to catch up with the progression.

  • For whatever reason it is like a tradition in this country to pay close attention to the First Lady's attire.

I have a feeling that you would probably pull the race card if they weren't talking about what Michelle Obama was wearing just like they have with every other First Lady..

New Orleans is majority African American.  I try not to judge people based on looks, but I find I get treated a bit differently because I am white.

  • While I appreciate you're just venting over such a big deal being made about the First Lady wearing shorts (which I find completely okay)...it has fhak all to do with race! They would have made the same comment about ANY First Lady in shorts.

    Please, don't get it twisted.

If Americans were so against having black people in the White House, then I venture to think Obama would not have won the election.

You probably aren't even old enough to remember the critcism Hilary got for her haircuts.  Or the criticism poor Chelsea got as a child for the very awkward stages of puberty she went through in the public eye.

So if they are picking on Michelle because she's black, why were they picking on Laura, Hilary, and Chelsea?

Seriously grow up.  Racism is still a problem in this country, but it sure as hell is not the reason why we are talking about what Michelle wears.
