Risk of bumpers and SIDS-are you getting bumbers?

So, I have been reading about how bumpes have a lot of safety risks for SIDS due to their not being a circular flow of air for the baby.  They make these mesh ones but they aren't nearly as cute.

How many of you are getting bumpers or how many are going with mesh?  Or, do you have other ideas?

  • We had one with Alek. He did just fine.

We will use the sleep positioner with Draven and moniter his sleeping habits before we trust him with one also.

  • DH and I bought the bumper that goes with the bedding set (it's not one of the ultra-breathable ones) and we plan to use it until our LO is old enough where it could become a risk for climbing on it.

We will also have a little fan in our baby's room to help with the air flow so between that and our baby monitor (which sets off an alarm if our LO stops breathing), I'm not too concerned about the SIDS risk.

  • Bumpers here.

  • I am getting regular cute (non-mesh) bumpers.  I put a fan in the baby's room to compensateWink for any additional SIDS risk.
  • I got the breathable ones. I don't care if they're cute, the suffocation thing scares me to death! Not even the SIDS risk, but the thought of suffocation! They start to roll and get their faces buried in there and then can't roll back over yet.... Ahhh it scares me.

Ooooo, what kind of monitor do you have? I'd really like to look into one of those

  • I'm getting one.  I will keep the baby in our bedroom for at least the 1st couple weeks in the PNP.  I will assess how paranoid when it comes time to put her in the crib!!!  I most likely will take it out.

This. No risk is the safest way to go. We didn't use one with my DS. Why risk your childs life for a cute nursery? It's not worth it.
  • I am not getting bumpers.  One Step Ahead Baby has these breathable bumpers though so that the crib does not look so empty.  A friend of mine has them and she loves them.
  • This is a friend's NEWBORN, rolled over. I know positioners can prevent this, but you never know. No way. Breathables for me, I'd rather have a live baby than a cute nursery...

  • ?Cute? doesn't enter the equation when it comes to safety, for me.  We used nothing at all in the crib until DD started getting arms and legs caught occasionally, and then we used the mesh bumper for a little while.

  • We are using bumpers. We have a ceiling fan for airflow. Once he starts rolling and moving all around, we may take them out. But every mom I know around here uses them.

Wow, that is a scary picture!  I think I will get the breathable bumpers for sure!

  • I am going with bumpers. If I notice our LO tends to roll to one side and push against the bumper I will remove it.

  • Not sure, but we usually have two or three fans (including a ceiling fan) going in the room, even in the winter, because I hate stagnant air, so I'm not so much worried about the air not circulating as I would be the bumpers not fitting right and covering the baby's face.

I am not arguing with you, or anyone else, but if your LO rolls over for the first time in the middle of the night and suffucates you'd never know. May be I just expect the worst, but it's something I won't risk at all.

Who has the monitor that says they stop breathing? I want that too! LOL. I know my friend has a mat that you lay underneath them and it can tell... I may have to investigate....

Yes this does happen, but the bumper is obviously installed incorrectly, my bumper has ties every 5 slots so there's no chance of it ever having that much leeway.

Agreed it is installed incorrectly. I'm still too afraid though LOL

  • We're getting a bumper and will tie it tightly.  We're also registered for the movement monitor and a sleep positioner.  I feel pretty good about our decision - for now.

this defies logic.  winking emoticon and all.

no bumpers.  not worth the risk, and then they use them to climb out.  what's the point.  also makes more to clean up when your baby barfs or has an explosive poop kind of night.

  • We'll use a breathable one once baby #2 can roll over / is out of a swaddle. Until then no bumper at all for us.

I've read alot about using a fan - how does that prevent your LO from rolling over an sticking their face in a quilted bumper?

I'm also amazed at how many pictures I see of babies in their crib with 10,000 stuffed animals. We JUST allowed DS to sleep with a couple stuffed animals and he's 2.5! Maybe I'm depriving him, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't give 2 sh*ts about a bumper. ;-)

Thanks for posting this pic.  Suffocation is a very real risk with bumpers and sleep positioners.    We had the privilege of hearing some very scary stories from nurses in NICU while DD had to stay there.   Just this year they've had reports of 4 babies suffocate from bumpers and sleep positioners.   They were very young babies.  You'd be surprised how mobile some newborns can be.

  • That bumper isn't on right... we have one and it is snug to the sides...
  • No bumper at first.  If we find we have a flailing baby and worry about appendages getting wedged in the bars or bumping heads on the sides a lot, we can look into a breathable bumper.
  • I like a set that comes with bumpers, but we won't use them....iIf we find that the baby is getting stuck between the slats or bumping his/her head, then we may reconsider, but for now there is no plan to use them.  I may find some way to repurpose them into something else to decorate the nursery...not quite sure yet.

FWIW, I am in the camp of safety first.  Cute nurseries are far less important than safe and sound babies.  We plan to have baby in a by-the-bed Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper for the first few months anyway.

  • It's so odd to me that people freak out about tiny bits of wine, lunch meat, unpasteurized cheese, amnio's, soft serve, etc., but then are perfectly comfortable with using bumpers. yes, everyone has to make their own compromises, but some of these are the same people who are so self-righteous about anything outside the norm during pregnancy.

    we're not using bumpers.

  • I'm getting one and just using the sleep positioner until he's older.  I've heard that those can also cause problems if the get on the face, but I'm not that worried.

  • Once again, the risk of SIDS has nothing to do with whether baby is able to roll yet or not.

There is a risk of suffocation if baby is smushed up against a non-breathable bumper, but prevailing thought is that the risk of SIDS has to do with airflow through the crib, which is greatly reduced with a standard bumper installed.  Baby does not have to be able to move an inch to be at risk.

With you 1000000001%. However, the SIDS risk is about the moveable air. It doesn't include "suffocation".

  • We're using a bumper. It is secured. They have sleep positioners. I don't see the difference in a bumper and a blanket that you wrap around your baby. Both could cause issues.

This! It's funny that you just wrote that, because I was thinking the same thing!!

  • Yeah, I know you're not supposed to do that but people have for many many years. Just seems like the swaddle blankets can do the same thing as a regular blanket.
  • No bumpers here.

  • So I didn't know there was a risk with positioners. Makes total sense. Glad I was given one used and won't feel bad about not using it now.... ;)
