We'll use a breathable one once baby #2 can roll over / is out of a swaddle. Until then no bumper at all for us.

I've read alot about using a fan - how does that prevent your LO from rolling over an sticking their face in a quilted bumper?

I'm also amazed at how many pictures I see of babies in their crib with 10,000 stuffed animals. We JUST allowed DS to sleep with a couple stuffed animals and he's 2.5! Maybe I'm depriving him, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't give 2 sh*ts about a bumper. ;-)

With you 1000000001%. However, the SIDS risk is about the moveable air. It doesn't include "suffocation".

Hmmm - found this on Wikipedia:

    Post-natal Risks:

excess bedding, clothing, soft sleep surface and stuffed animals[55]

  • we are, we plan to use it before baby can roll over, then remove for a while and use again once baby is much more mobile and getting limbs caught in the slats.

Like I said, 100000001% with you. I agree. I just think the OP was talking about the airflow concern.

I plan on using all the precautions! I saw in a magazine there's a room thermometer that tells you if the room is too cold or hot and changes color. I guess the rooms are supposed to be a a certain temperature as well? And it doubles as a handy nightlight ;)

  • We will be getting both a plush and breathable bumper.  Baby won't be in the crib until he/she is old enough to be rolling away in both directions.  I know the plush one was necessary for my brother and my nephew, so we'll see how it goes.  If we feel concerned we'll switch.  When he/she is big enough to pull up - we'll switch.

  • I used bumpers with DS 5 years ago, and plan on using them again.
  • We're using a breathable bumper.  Also, absolutely no blankets, stuffed animals, sleep positioners, etc.  Sure you may have had another child that did fine with all of these things, but if my child was the one in a million that suffocated I would never forgive myself for wanting to use that "cute" quilted bumper.
  • Wait, what?  I know you aren't supposed to "cover" them with a blanket, but can you swaddle them at night?

Ditto this exactly.  Just because lots of children use them safely does not mean that they don't pose a risk.  Heck, we all lived through infancy in cribs that do not meet today's safety requirements - and I haven't seen anyone on here saying they are going to use their cute crib from their childhood because they did fine with it.

There is a lot of conflicting information out there.  Some organizations say don't use them at all.  Some say they are okay, but only if they aren't too fluffy (how do you define that?) and they are secured properly and you also have a fan in the room.

To me - there are too many unanswered questions about their safety, so it's a no-brainer that we will not use them.  Why exactly would I risk using a traditional bumper?  Because it's cute in the crib?

Our set came with bumpers and I will either be re-piecing the fabric into floor cushions or fabric wall hangings - or saving them for when we convert the crib to a toddler bed for additional decor once the safety risks are gone.

  • We didn't use bumpers with DD because our nursery was painted and decorated a lot and we didn't buy a bed set, just plain sheets, blankets, etc. Then I heard about the suffocation risks and decided DEFINTIELY not. I never really understood the appeal to bumpers anyway, so we will not be using them this time either.
  • I am glad someone finally mentioned sleep positioners. Those are just as unsafe as bumpers. There are many things wrong with the above picture, the bumper and installation, the stuffed ball, crib by the window, etc etc etc...The poster doesnt mention so I am assuming that the baby is ok though not sure why anyone felt the need to take a picture of such a horrific sight BEFORE helping the baby.
  • No bumpers and a Halo sleep sack!
  • we are getting a bumper, and a fan. If I am feeling uber paranoid when the time comes I might wrap the front bumper behind the side so that its only three sided, but we'll see.
  • We will use bumpers like we did with our first two. Our kids don't go into the crib until they are moving well enough to get out of compromising positions anyway. They generally room in with us in a PNP until then.
  • I decided no bumpers... not worth the risk. I will have super cute sheets that will add cute color to the crib and will use the breathable ones if need be.
