Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My fun, fun night (Long)

Last night as we were about to go to bed around 11pm Liev woke up crying and coughing a lot.  I went up there to see him because he does not caugh like that and I knew something was wrong.  As soon as I got upstairs I caught a whiff of a truly vile smell...and it was coming from his room.  Turns out he was not coughing, he was vomiting and was face down in an enormous pool of vomit. His entire face was covered in it, eyes, eyelashes, you name it.

I took him straight to the tub where my husband had started running the hot water.  I sat him in there as he was and washed his face.  He was trembling and just disoriented.  I finally stripped him down and to add insult to injury, he was also very pooped.  The entire time he was getting a bath he was just quivering, I'm guessing it was just because he was a bit cold.

We got him out of the tub, dried him up and got him dressed.  I cleaned the mattress up, put new sheets on, etc. I wen to take a shower because I was covered in vomit  and Matt rocked him for a while and put him down in the crib.  He looked fine so we started getting ready bed.  As soon as we got under the covers Liev started making cough sounds again.  Back in we went and found him throwing up again.

We went through the clean up process again, changed him, changed sheets, ets.  Rocked again and put down but Matt says he didn't look too well when he put him down so he stayed in the room.  There he went again.

This was the first time this happened to us so we had no idea what to do.  We live close to a hospital so we just decided to take him in.  He threw up twice more in the hospital's parking lot, the poor guy was just vomiting bile because he had nothing left in his stomach.

Luckly they hospital has a pediatric ER and it was pretty quick, we were there less than one hour.  The doctor said every kid he had in there had the same thing.  Apparently it's just a stomach bug.  He was give Zofran for the nausea and vomiting and some pedialyte so see if he could keep it down.  He did so we went home.

He was SO sleepy so he crashed as soon as we got home, and so did we.  Two hours later, at around 4am, I got woken up by a strage noise coming from the upstairs floor.  It was vibrating and humming and if I steped hard on a certain spot on the floor it stopped.  This went on for a while and we couldn't sleep.  We had no idea what it was, we even thought we had a fire in there.  Matt finally went ouside and the sprinklers were on, as soon as they turned off the noise and vibration stopped.  WTF??  How can the sprinklers make the floor/ceiling vibrate?  We still don't know what it was and hope it wasn't anything serious and that it won't happen again.

We were up with Liev just after 8am.  That was my fun night.  What a way to end Liev's birthday!

  • Poor guy, I hope he's feeling better and you all get some much needed rest. At least he won't actually remember this birthday.
  • That sucks. Maddie has had a couple of those. It's awful. Thankfully she was young enough that we had her sleep in the bouncy next to our bed or the pack and play set up in our room (when she got too big for the bouncy) so I could get to her immediately when she started throwing up.

  • oh sweety--I'm so sorry!  The SAME thing happened to us a couple weeks ago----the vomiting in the crib....etc.  He also had diarrhea.  I guess there is this super GI bug going around----but I hate to tell you this....

he got it Saturday night and by Monday morning HE was fine....but I was not---got the SAME thing from him.  BUT it gets worse---then DH got it like the  next day (at work).  It was horrible.  It only lasted about 2 days for each of us--but it was horrible.  Non-stop vomiting/diarrhea.  I lost about 5 pounds.

So get some rest and he'll be better in a day or so.....but it's horrible to watch.  I got non-flavored pedialyte and put in a bottle of water to help him.

and of course follow the BRAT diet.

  • Oh joy!

The doctor told us to give him only pedialyate today until this afternoon and then start him on a BRAT diet for a couple of days.
