I was researching different types of schools - Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, just out of curiosity. Found a post on the AP board about Waldorf.
I had no idea. No clue. How can parents get roped into this? Scratch that. I can see how, but man. I would just be horrified if I hadn't found this out and had ended up sending DD to a Waldorf school.

Re: Waldorf schools are terrifying.
Yep. Steiner or whatever his name is, was a real cuckoo.

I love these two beautiful children!
One woman was very well informed about Waldorf and shared a lot of her information, thankfully. She can't say enough great things about Reggio Emilia, though.
Oh no it is utterly terrifying. I mean really. The mirror-fearing, left-hand fearing GNOME fearing lot of them are a bunch of utter nutters.
Truly one of the most terrifying concepts I've ever researched. I had looked into a Waldorf school mom & tot class and I was like "oooh creative expression! How exciting. That sounds good for... gnomes? oh. Ok. I no. No."
Has anyone researched Steiner????? ::shivers::
I used to like gnomes. Now I'm freaked out. There's one sitting outside my door, and I want to throw him to the neighbors. I don't want him to explain how a copying machine works - how he sits inside it and shoots out papers from his cave. What.the.hell.
A gnome is a gnome. Not an intelligent living breathing creature that controls children.
wha...? this is all rather terrifying. maybe homeschool isn't such a freaky option anymore...
kidding, of course.
I have not. I'm a little terrified. I might have to treat myself with blueberry cream cheese and a bagel in order to do this.
there is a waldorf critics board. Thousands and thousands of child "survivors'' of their cults.
I keep shaking my head. Am I wrong to be sending Jo to a coop nursery school where the teachers are fun and the kids get choices in what to do each day and where she gets to finger paint with pudding?
Oh Lori you slay me<3

Duh. Because they learn about the physiology and habits of gnomes.
Interesting.. there was a Waldorf school by my old house and I actually applied to teach there (and a million other places). I never got a call but this makes me glad I didn't. Not quite my teaching philosophy!
I didn't know much about it to be honest. Of course that link is an opinion, but WOW. The first parts I could handle, though I really don't agree.
Then I got to this part and I stopped reading after that. This is just so so so wrong on so many levels! It really makes me sad
"Worse in my eyes than not teaching accurate facts in the classroom was the reality that children who had interests in things that were not part of the Waldorf curriculum for their age were not only not allowed to learn about those interests at school, but their parents were encouraged, (dare I say ?pressured?) to not allow them to pursue their interests at home either. Their parents were told that exposure to anything non-Waldorf would hurt their development. So no matter how interested, a child could not, even on his own time, read (below 3rd grade), look at a book that they personally did not make (below 6th grade), look at maps, draw lines and geometric shapes... ."

No colouring with dark coloured crayons, no mirrors, no left-handedness.
People you have only started down the path of crazy.
Wait, what?? WTH do they have against dark colored crayons??? And mirrors?
I iz confused.

NO REALLY. This is directly from a waldorf website.
I'm ok with alternative choices but when a school is genuinely made up of whackjobs, I have to laugh at it. Montessori is a good option. I like a lot of their styles. I have 0 issue with public schooling though and am a big advocate, so Jo will go there. We're doing a coop nursery program next year and I love what I see in that place. She'll be there 3 mornings a week.
Oh well THAT explains everything then. ::side eye:: Seriously, what kind of a BSC weirdo comes up with this crap?
Just to spite said idiot, the first crayon that Jack gets will be black. I might even make it a sharpie so it's PERMANENTLY lifeless.
The Mouse ~ 06.12.08 | The Froggy ~ 02.23.11
I think its weird too as generally children like to colour their families and friends and things familiar to them.
Teaching any child that "Black" is the colour of lifelessness makes me feel rather queasy.
I am a lefty. Which is exactly why I turned my back on this nonsense.
I am not kidding. This is some serious ridiculousness.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn! That is some crazy shiit.
I remember touring a turn of the century schoolhouse where they recreated that experience for my 3rd grade class. All the lefties giggled when the teacher made them write with their right hands (left was the devil's!) I still remember thinking "how crazy!"
But there's good old Waldorf, bringing it back. Of course in your case blondie, it may be true. have you thought about putting away the mirrors.
Did you read the part about "no recorded music?"
BAHAHAHAHAAHAH.
One more reason to hate on this. I have 17quadrillion hours on my Itunes right now.
No, really. Are your crayons beeswax, lanie? Because if it's a light colored crayon and it isn't beeswax?? Well, poo on you.
im pretty sure they are talking about the 'concept' Waldorf schools, not the actual school district.
I thought she was kidding. No? Perhaps she went to waldorf school.
hmm, I thought she was serious...but hopefully for her sake she wasn't?
