When did you start ordering a meal for DC?

When we go out we rarely order DS#!1 his own meal.  I swear every time we actually pay for something for him, he won't eat it.  I usually bring him things to eat or he'll pick off our plates.  When did you consistently start to order a separate meal that they actually eat?

  • We have since about 13 months.  Most of the time the food goes to waste or gets packed up to take home.

  • I'm about 60/40 right now. It really depends on where we go and what they have on their kids menu. DS just started regularly eating grilled cheese and fries, so that's generally a sure bet. Or pizza. But we still always bring backup food (especially fruit because he's obsessed with it and it will keep him quiet) just in case. But I'm trying to not have to pull out our food unless I have to because I really want him to eat what we are eating or what the restaurant has. He still doesn't eat much of his meal most of the time, but I figure it's progress if he's eating any and understands that how restaurants work.

  • We started ordering off the kids menu when DS was 11 months old. He loves to eat though and normally almost finishes the whole meal! I probably wouldn't order him his own if he didn't eat it though.

  • We started ordering him his own meal when we went to Denver with DH for work as few weeks ago; I couldn't bring as much as I usually would that week. He surprised us by doing really well with his kids' meals! Ate more than our 3-year-old nephew. Prior to that, the only thing we'd ordered for him was a sweet potato and some shredded cheese. :) He gets his own meal when we go out now, whether it's at Panera, Long Horn, or Jimmy John's.

  • Zachary has food allergies, so we always pack him something to eat when we go out.  We actually almost never leave home without a meal packed in case we get tied up somewhere and have to eat out.

If we have something we're sure is "safe" on our plate, we'll also share that.

  • I order one, but why I'm not sure because it is such a waste of money.  My daughter barely eats any of it.  I usually order it because I know if it's a kids meal they will bring it out first and generally we order a soup or appetizer.

  • DS has had his own meal maybe 5 times.  One we don't eat out much and I hate to waste any food.  I usually pack a sandwhich and fruit.  It just depends on his mood.  I do take what he doesn't eat home though.  Waste not, want not!
  • if DH and I order something they DD won't like then she gets her own. With her it's hit or miss how much she eats. I usually order her a side order of something (applesauce, veggies, potato) and then just give her some of mine.

Same, and if he doesn't finish something I will bring it home and he has it the next day for lunch.  I try to order foods that will reheat well for those times he doesn't finish the meal.

  • Probably around a year. He usually eats most of it, and what he doesn't eat can be his lunch the next day.

Yesterday at a turnpike rest stop he devoured a small fry and two chicken tenders, an entire kids' meal. And then ate a full dinner, very full, three hours later.

    Ditto...

Unless one of us is getting something that we know she will eat and we won't finish...

  • We started ordering him is own meal sometime after one year (maybe 13 months?).  At first he would just share my food, but he quickly started chowing down and needing his own.

  • we have never ordered her her own meal.  I change what I may have wanted to pick though if I can't share it with her.  She eats part of my meal and part of DH's and she gets enough.  I usually only bring her milk and sometimes I'll bring a little apple sauce to add some fruit to the meal.  She is starting to eat a lot though and now I'm eatting for two...so not sure how long I'll want to share still ;)~

  • Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't.  Depends what we are ordering for ourselves.  I like to order seafood which DD can't have yet so then it all depends what DH orders, which sometimes he goes really spicy which we don't rely on her liking.  Many times we will order her and app or a side dish that works well.  Seldom do we order off the kids menu.
  • He almost always eats what we order for ourselves. We each put a little on  a plate or his portable placemat. He eats what we eat at home too, rarely is there something he can't eat. Also, I figure most restaurant portion sizes are too big anyway, so this keeps me from overeating!
