Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Best advice you've been given about being a mom?

What is the best advice you've been given so far about being a mom?

All of the older moms/grandmas in my life have told me over and over to just "be" with LO while they are babies - just sit with them and be with them. I was talking to several women this weekend and they all said, "Yeah, my house was clean, but who cares about that now? I wish I would have spent more time with my babies."

I think I naturally put off chores for more fun things like hanging out with baby, but when they tell me this, I feel a little less guilty about it :)

So, what is the best advice you've been given?

  • One of my friends told me "do whatever works," the first few months. Very true.

  • The best advice I was given was to ignore uninvited advice.

  • Go with the flow and don't worry about schedules and what you "should" be doing.  Do what works for your child and your family.
  • Everything is temporary.  The good, the bad and the ugly!

  • I actually think my pediatrician gave me the best advice in the hospital to just do whatever works and that the only things that really matter in teh those first few days/weeks are that the baby is gaining weight and I am getting some sleep. Other than that, everything will work itself out.

  • same as you re: chores/housework.  My house was messy for the first 8 or so months after K was born, but I got to cuddle with her all day long.  Now that she's so independent my house is all clean again, but I'd give anything to cuddle with her like we used to.

  • To relax and not try to be perfect.  I need to practice it more.
  • Someone told me to enjoy every moment because I'll blink and he'll be 10 years old. That helped me put a lot of things into perspective. I'd rather spend an hour with DS and 10 minutes cleaning than the opposite. I'd rather schedule a vacation day to hang out with DH and DS than worry about what's waiting for me at work. I'd rather grab takeout than cook if it means we can squeeze in a trip to the park. I view my daily life much differently because of that advice.
  • This too, shall pass.

  • To just relax and enjoy the ride. The decisions that feel soooo important today will seem inconsequential tomorrow.

Totally....and along the same sentiment, that just when you get used to a new situation, then something completely different pops up and everything changes all over again!

ITA - my view is very different now.

  • "Bottle it up" - meaning, whenever you are having a great day, great moment, etc, just bottle it up so that you can sprinkle it out when you really need it.
