Babies: 9 - 12 Months

does anyone have a biter?

DS doesn't bite when he nurses, but bites me on my shoulder, arms, stomach, legs, toes (yep) as often as he can.  He's been doing this for about 2 weeks now.  He doesn't seem to be teething (he already has 7 teeth).

I firmly say "no" and stop whatever we're doing, but DS just laughs.  I try to redirect as much as possible, but sometimes he takes me by surprise.  If you're in the same boat, or have been...what do you do?!?!

  • Oh my, I can relate!  DS has been doing it since birth!  He now has four teeth and it hurts soooo bad.  I try really hard not to react and just redirect.  But apprarently that does not work!!!  I hope you get a really helpful response and we can end this soon!

  • DS did this for months in spurts.  He has just recently stopped biting.  We actually did time outs.  We set up a pack and play with toys in our bedroom and whenever DS bit or did something we had said no to more than 3 times he goes in his 'box' for a few minutes.  When he would bite, we would yelp in pain (it did hurt), and then said that hurt mama (dada, grandma) and walk him up to his box.  After being really consistent for a few days we dramatically reduced his biting.

  • I do!  I have a biter!!

I try to say "no biting" really firmly and not give it any other attention than that.  It actually has somewhat been reduced.

I have to bite my tongue sometimes so I don't yell (from pain, not at DS).  Because that will just make him laugh and he thinks it's a game.

It's hard because I deal with biters in my class at work (most of them are over a year), but dealing with my own biter at home is a whole new world.

  • yes, and it doesn't hurt, so it's hard not to laugh because it's so cute!!  But I say no biting very firmly and hope it will sink in before she starts drawing blood.

  • DD is doing this now.  She seems to do it in spurts.  In June was doing it also right before a tooth broke through.  Then it was mostly on my shoulders.  She left bad bruises from it.  It hurt like crazy.  Now she bites anypart of me she can get in her mouth (my nose, my chin, my fingers, my knuckles, shoulder, etc).

I also used to laugh... until he actually did break the skin... a couple of times.

Sometimes he'll get ahold so tight and bite down so hard that he shakes.

  • YES! Baby J loves to bite! We are hoping he grows out of it very fast. However my H and I playfully bite him all the time too, out of habit. Tongue Tied
