Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How long is/was your infant in an infant seat?

I am just wondering how many bases I should get for my infant seat. ?I am planning being home for 4-5 months after LO is born & after that my mother will watch the baby. ?Would I be better off just getting her a car seat that goes from 5+ lbs rather than another base for my infant carrier? ?I feel like my friends babies all move out of the carrier well before a year b/c they get sick of carrying it around. ?

ps-my LO is measuring pretty big so I don't *plan* on a really small baby?

  • I do have a small baby so he is still in his infant seat. We only have one base.  I have always just traded it out if we switch cars, which is not very often.  Maybe you could buy the extra base but keep it in the box and return it if you don't end up using it.

  • DD is just moving out of hers at 8 months and I think she's a little bigger than average, but not huge.

My mom got an infant car seat - but she's only used it a handful of times - seriously maybe 10 times total.  In retrospect, the smartest thing would have been for me to buy an infant seat and then a regular convertible seat for her car since DD is in it so rarely.

  • DS is going to move to a convertible seat this month (at 8 months) because he's tall even though he's very skinny. If you're going to use different cars often, then I would get 2 bases but otherwise I would just switch the base from one car to the other (that's what we do).

  • We went to a convertible seat at exactly 6 months, but I think we pushed it a little longer than we should have.  DS is 99th% on weight and height, though, if that makes a difference.  His carrier became extremely heavy for me to carry at 4 months.  I always used the stroller or a shopping cart if I had to carry it for more than a few minutes.

ETA:  We had a Graco Snugride and you can also strap the infant seat into a car without the base as long as there is a center lap belt in your mom's car.  It's really not that difficult - just not something you would want to do on an every day basis.  We did it with my mom's car several times.

  • DD is still in her infant seat at 9 months but will be out of it in another month or 2.  I would recommend getting an infant seat just because you will definitely want a carrier.  When she was younger I couldn't have lived without my carrier.  I also would get a base for each car because that has been so convenient for us.
  • OH and once they get bigger just stop carrying it around.  Use the stroller or the shopping carts.  You can leave the carrier part in the car.  I do a lot now that DD is 20 lbs.
  • At about 5 months my DS was already 17 pounds, and I had long been over that infant carrier at that point. It became very difficult for me to lug him around. I couldn't wait to make the switch to his convertable car seat. That being said though, I was glad we had the infant carrier when he was teeny tiny. I wouldn't have wanted to disturb him by pulling him out of the car while he was sleeping. Plus he always had a place to sit and sleep if we went to visit someone or went to a restaurant.
  • My baby was 10lbs 8ozs 22 in at birth.  She is now about 20+ lbs and we stopped using the infant carrier a little over a month ago because she was too big for it and cried every time we put her in it.  We had 2 bases for our cars and now bought the Graco MyRide conv seats.  For the grandparents, I would just go with a convert. seat from the beginning.  You wont want your LO riding around with others until he/she is at least a few months.  Unless the bases to your carseat are cheap (ours were $70 each) I would just get them to buy conv seats so that they will last longer.  I figure we can use the infant seat with our next LO so I wasn't worried about buying the 2 bases for it.  I could not have made it through the first few months without the infant seat though...and I know that switching car seats around is not recommended.
  • He out grew his infant seat at about 5.5 months.  Personally I would buy an inexpensive convertible for grandparents.

  • My mom also watches DS.  I gave her an extra base.  We moved DS out of the infant seat in our cars at about 7 months.  He still fit in it actually had a long time left but hated that car seat.  Also, we tried just leaving the car seat in the car and taking him out but I'm so short and the angle of the seat made it really hard to buckle him in.  We gave her his infant seat for a while.  Now, I just got her a convertible for her car too.  I debated about going for a really cheap seat for her car.  But, she is out and about with him (not as much as I am) but still.  Also, it is moved in and out of the car if someone else needs to ride in back too.  I did spend a little more money and got her a Britax Marathon for her car. The Latch bars make all the difference.
