Ideas to get DS to eat more

DS loves to eat but very small quantities and then he's just done (turns away, purses lips, starts whining). He does this both for bm and solids. At 8 months, he's 17.5 lb and although he hasn't technically lost weight, he's on a different weight curve - he's on a flat line right now (I've posted about this before, just need more ideas). Do you have any ideas how to get him to eat more? Any links/books would be great too. TIA

Re: Ideas to get DS to eat more

  • Start trying new table foods maybe.  DD will eat small pieces of chicken, cantaloupe, yogurt, pudding etc..  Also try feeding him when your eating, that way he will be more interested, DD is always interested in what I am eating. Today while I was eating DD and I shared Chicken and Cantaloupe, and I gave her bits of cheese.  Also if you are on a feeding schedule not feeding on demand try to wait longer between feedings so he will be more hungry.  Oh and I wouldn't worry about his weight, DD didn't weight but maybe a pound more than about a half of a pound more than that at 8 months.

  • i wouldn't worry too much unless your pedi says something.  if it makes you feel any better, my friends 15 month old just hit 18 pounds.

  • Well, based on personal experience, I'd say deep fry it and dip in ranch. Ya, that should work.

I'm no help at all. But I had to do it.

  • Has your pedi said anything?  If not, then I wouldn't worry.  You can't force feed a baby, a baby knows how much he/she needs!  If you are worried he is still hungry, but maybe just bored with the meal, you can always offer more snacks, but let him decide how much to eat.  I second the idea to offer more types of food with different tastes and textures to see if he will eat other kinds of things, especially higher fat foods: cheese, avocado, banana, etc. etc

  • I would just keep trying different foods - and maybe try some finger foods too.

DD hated somethings pureed, but loved them as finger foods.

We do green beans, bananas and blueberries as finger foods now and she loves them.  We also do small bits of cheese and also try to feed her a little bit of whatever we're eating.

  • Give him lots of variety, but you can't make him eat. He's smart enough to know when he's hungry and when he's full.
