Re: Favorite names that are too odd

  • I love Paris because that is where we were engaged, but Paris Hilton has ruined this for me.  Not that it is odd or quirky...just ruined :)

  • We have a weird last name, so we do better with more basic first names. ?If we had an easier last name, I might actually use one or two of these.?

    Boys:

    Axel?

    Ulysses?

    Clem?

    Shooter?

    Girls:?

    Prue (nn for Prudence)

    Odessa?

    Tallulah

    Paloma

    Frida

  • I like a lot of Roman and ancient Greek names like Tarquin, Cyrus, Cassius, and Justus but H would never get on board.
  • Since I was probably 7 or 8 years old I've loved Vera. I would never use it, but I think it's beautiful. I think Adelaide is gorgeous too, but Dh would never ever like it.
  • Wren and Tuesday for girls, for boys Levi, Kai and Jude (I know they're not that weird but DH would def veto  lol)

  • I just love the name Stellan for a boy.  But it's a little out there, and I would hate to give my theoretical son or daughter an out there name.  I really want a classic, straightforward name for my child, should I ever have one.  Plus, husband's last name (that's right, I kept mine, and wish we could hyphenate but it would be a horrible mouthful) is just awful, so something normal for a first name is essential.
  • Stella is my fave old girls name, but DH hates it. I find Henry adorable too.

  • One name I am oddly attracted too is Bruno!  I am not sure if I have the stones to use it though...

  • I like Harvey, but hubby says absolutely not... ever... in a gazillion years...

  • I've always thought the French pronunciation for Agnes to be beautiful, but in English, it's just butchered.

  • Ananda (bliss):  knew one as a kid and LOVE it, but just too weird/you-neek now.

Thlayli (from Watership Down):  proof that pre-pubescent girls should not breed OR have naming rights.

DH & I both like Felix but have ruled it out. I used to love the name Aurelia for a girl, but now it seems like too much. DH & I also love Prudence bc we love the Beatles song, but it is way too clunky and weird w/ our last name.

DH would never tell me no for Harvey, not because he likes it so much, but it was my grandfathers name, who passed away before my parents got married. Everyone always says (aunts and uncles) that I am so much like him in personality and things that its almost unreal, especially since I never met him. However I just have another family name we plan to use for a boy because it will hit two grandfathers, an uncle and DH!

  • I love the name Adanic for a boy. I know its odd, and just sounds made up. Its got an interesting tie to our family and names though. DH said no. But If I told you what DH wants to do for a boy, I know some ladies on here would hate it.

  • Maverick. I would use it too, but it got shot down

  • I liked Baylor for a boy but MH had a heyday with nicknames and vetoed it immediately.

I have to say, I cannot imagine naming a child Shooter.... ?! :)

  • Girl: Matilda, Piper

    Boy: Norman?

I love the name Vera. I never thought of using that name until I saw this post. I am def going to run it by DH tonight.

  • Siobhan  - it's so pretty but no one would know how to say it and I just can't do that to my kid

Eowyn - it's from Lord of the Rings and I'm not sure we want to be "those parents" that named their kid after some character from J.R.Tolkien's crazy world... but I think it's a really cool name still....

I heard a mom calling her son that was named Maverick a few years ago and told DH (fiance at the time) that I thought that was a cool name. I think he was freaked out that I would want to name our future children it,so now that's our dogs name ... lol ...VERY cute name though :)

I like Eowyn too and recently thought of going for something Tolkien-ish for a girl but DH said no way.

  • I love the name Anastasia, but would never do that to my child.... which is why it is DD's middle name lol.
  • I have always like the name Ira because one of my favorite books as a child was Ira Sleeps Over. I just don't think I could bring myself to name my son Ira but I do really like it.

sloane isn't odd, it's awesome!  luv that name :)

We know a Bruno. At first I thought it was odd, but he is the most lovely little boy, as are his parents, and now I think it is a wonderful name!

I know an Eowyn.  I suppose it sounds pretty, but I have to admit I still roll my eyes about it and she's 2yo.

  • I really wanted to call ds Meyer.  If I lobbied for it hard enough DH would have gone along with me, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
  • I really like very ethnic names like Etienne, Jacques, Zakai, and Grainne, but could never do that to my American mutt of a child.  I also like names from my favorite literature, usually people with tragic endings like Ophelia, Cordelia, etc.  So those are out.

I also love Eowyn, but DH is a crazy LOTR fan, so it would be doubly bad for us to use it...Isolde may end up as a middle name one of these days, which isn't LOTR, but still... =P

I have to say, I cannot imagine naming a child Shooter.... ?! :)?

I know, it's terrible. ?But for some reason I still like it. ?Shooter Jennings is a musician, that's where it came from.

I think Rocco and Bruno sound very cool together.?

  • I've always loved Josiah for a boy, but DH hates it...then again he likes Thaddius...eww

  • I love Irish names but I'm not even a little bit Irish and neither is my DH. I think an Irish name for a Swedish-Canadian child would be too odd...

I do love names like Aoife, Saoirse, Niamh, Eimear, Seamus, Eoin though...

Awesome! I'm glad that I helped you!?

I LOVE Felicity too, but DH wanted nothing to do with it!?

    ?

How do you pronounce these names??

  • I had a childhood friend named China Blue. I always thought it was such a pretty name, but now it would NEVER go with my married last name. I also really love India and Paris for girls and Finn, Kai, Jett, and Felix for a boy, all of which DH vetoed!
