2nd Trimester

Am I weird or does anyone else feel this way?

I don't want a gross baby handed to me.  I really want the first image of my child to be a nice one, not full of gunk and blood.  Some say I will change my mind in the moment, but I feel pretty strongly about this.  Does anyone else have these feelings?

  • I don't mind holding her but we totally agree no pictures of the baby until it has been cleaned up.

I do, but to a certain extent... I just hope it's not covered in poo... I think I can handle the other stuff, as distasteful as it may seem now.

  • Ha!  Yes!  I've told DH and my Mom that I want to see the baby asap, but they can clean him or her up before handing over to us.

My Mom did her best to be supportive and I could tell she was holding in a chuckle :)  But I really am serious.

  • wow. it's not some gross random baby.  it's your baby.

they wiped dd off as she was lying on my stomach, but to be honest i didn't even notice anything about what she was covered in.

  • I just want to hold my baby.  I really don't care what it's covered in.
  • LOL. This must be "Gross-Out Day" on 2nd tri. There have been so many posts about things that gross people out about birth.

I am okay with a bloody, vernix caseosa-covered LO. To me, it seems like one of those situations where you are already just nasty and gross, so why not just embrace it?

But I can see people not enjoying that, as well. :)

    .
  • I'm not saying I won't hold her before she's cleaned up. I'm saying we're not taking any pictures of her all gooey. Same token no pictures of me until I have a chance to freshen up.

well that's obviously your choice.  but seeing the very first picture of my naked screaming beautiful daughter is priceless.

  • I'll be lucky if any pictures of my daughter come out. I'm the photographer in the family, my husband has a degree in physics and yet cannot seem to operate a camera to save his life. I've given him tutorials, it is sad.
  • I think that is weird.  I want to see my babys first moment in this world.  I could probably do without pictures though.

This post is making me giggle so much... it's just hitting my funny bone hard.

I don't think babies are exactly covered in blood when born, and full term babies usually don't have that much vernix left. I'm pretty sure you won't find your baby gross, lol.

  • I don't think you're weird, its your own opinions...but I don't care if I poo and the baby lands in it on the way out they better hand me the baby immediately.

I am okay with the dr laying the baby on me right after birth. I DO NOT want my dr to tell me to reach down and pull him out! That is just too much for me.

Wow, I might be clueless but I didn't even know doctors would do this! I want to hold my baby no matter what its covered in, but I agree I don't think I want to help pull it out. The thought of that kind of makes me want to pass out.

    this.

i am also doing a water birth so kudos on the short bath comment! LOL

Exactly this!  I'm excited about my baby coming to this world period.

  • I am delivering in a birthing center where the philosophy is that skin to skin contact immediately after birth is preferable to the baby being whisked away. I can't wait to have my LO put on my belly and snuggle him/her close, it does not gross me out at all. I think it will be a moment I will treasure forever.

Thank you! The dr's on Baby story usually ask mom to reach down (hands under babys armpits) and help pull the baby out! It makes my stomach turn! I already told my dr there will be none of that happening at my birth. She just laughs- I am serious- write it down I tell her.

  • Yeah...I'd be pissed if they didn't hand over my "gross" baby (if the baby is well, of course).

Precisely. My favorite pics are the first ones.

  • Not sure if it's weird or not but I felt the same way wth DD#1...we requested clean up before we held her at my last ob appt...ended up not mattering since I had a c/s but I agree, who wants to cuddle and kiss that slime :)

You know she's going to do it now, just to mess with you! lol

  • I've never really thought about it.
  • I don't think you are weird. I want my baby cleaned up first. I get sick easily over blood and "medical stuff" and the last thing I want is to be sick the first time I see my baby. I was the same way with DS. Also, I am having a repeat c-section (not by choice) and the whole process of that makes me nauseous.

This exactly!   I'm a huge believer in skin-to-skin.

This might be a dumb question but the "skin to skin" thing confuses me. Aren't you in a hospital gown or wearing something when you deliver? I definately want the baby right away; but it seems like it would be skin to gown :)

  • This is baby number 3 for me, so speaking from experience I GUARANTEE you that you will NOT notice any of that when they hand your new baby to you. You truly don't even see it. Your amazement at seeing this person that's been living in you for nearly a year is so overwhelming that you'll almost be in shock to finally see them in the flesh. My youngest actually pooped on my arm right after he was born and I didn't even realize it until they took him away to clean him up. And even that didn't gross me out in the least. I just laughed.
  • I will also be doing a water birth, so hopefully some of the "goo" gets rinsed away. DH is super excited to catch him, and then he'll come to me. I might be grossed out if he's covered in stuff still, but it's like like I will refuse to touch him until he's clean. I'm just crossing my fingers that he actually is born in water, so he gets a quick rinse lol

  • Ha ha I think of this everytime people post pics of their "fresh" newborn. I'm sure in the moment I will want to hold LO asap, but I am pretty sure the pics can wait till she's a little tidier.
  • i told DH this exact thing and he got mad and said that was horrible, how could i say that about our baby. when the time comes i will probably be so overcome with joy that i wont care. but i would like him to come out nice and pink, swaddled and ready to be cuddled. haha!

    exactly this!

    Seriously!

It's YOUR baby, covered in your fluids. How will you change explosive diapers and deal with getting puked on? Good lord.

  • Before DD was born, I thought for sure I'd want her cleaned up before I held her.  Then I ended up with a c-section and it was a pretty good amount of time before I had even an opportunity to hold her. Sad  Yes, she had been cleaned off (even had a bath), but it was so not worth the 4 and a half hour wait.

This time, if I am successful in my VBAC, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to catch my own baby, or at least help to do so.  There is no way anyone is getting their hands on my LO before me.

Well, I am hoping to do a water birth so I am likely going to be pretty close to naked if not completely. If I am in a gown, I will just hike it up, or open up the nursing part.

  • I wonder how she's going to feel about changing diapers...?
  • I will be fine with diapers and puke, I would do anything for my child!  I don't want to make it sound like i won't be able to deal with gross things!  This will be my first birth, so I very well may feel different.
  • It's not as if they're handing you a baby that has been dunked in hazardous waste- "Ew, get it away from me!".  The baby will have fluids, etc. from YOU on him or her.  It's not going to kill you to get a little messy.

I imagine I'll be pretty sweaty and teary by that point anyway, and after waiting 9 months to meet my baby, I'm not going to wait while someone cleans him/her.

  • After 9 long months of growing baby, and a potentially long and difficult labour working harder than you've ever worked before to bring your baby into the world, you may (probably?) not care at all how "gross" your baby is. I know I didnt care. I also helped deliver my baby (which was weird when my MW first suggested it, but then I wanted nothing more than to grab my baby). And I delivered in the water (8 days overdue) so DS came out pretty clean. But i certainly wouldn't (and won't this next time) care either way.

I wish I could have the chance to hold my baby as soon as she is born.  Unfortunately, I will be strapped to a table so holding her is out of the question.  Those few hours waiting to see her are going to be miserable. Sad
