GD - anyone see an endochrinologist?

My OB has referred me to an Endo for my GD.  I go for the first time on Wed.  I have PCOS and strong family history of type II Diabetes so I'm not real surprised with the dx.  But from what I've read it seems most people are treated through their OB and a nutritionist.  Is it odd that I'm going to see an Endo?

Re: GD - anyone see an endochrinologist?

  • mine sent me to an edo as well.  basically i met with the dietician and she showed me how to use my meter and then i came back a week later and they did bloodwork and reviewed how my sugars had been - then they put me on insulin and now i fax my #s twice a week and they call me to tell me if i should up my insulin or not.  my next appt with them is at about 37 weeks - everything else we're doing by phone.

  • I was referred to one as well, never met with him. I have been dealing with the Nurse at the office who is a certified GD educator.
  • I don't think it's odd at all.  I'm seeing an endo once a month (I fax her my blood sugars every week), as well as all my regular appointments with my OB.  I just think that every OB is different.  Some feel comfortable handling their GD patients while others like to refer them to an endo.

  • I see an endo in conjunction with the diabetes nurse educator and a dietitian.
  • I see an endocrinologist for my GD.  He checks my sugars, and adjusts my insulin as needed.  I just let mu OB know how it's going, and what my doses of insulin is at each visit.  That's the way my OB manages GD.

  • Endo has more experience with diabetes, hands down. They see people with diabetes pre-pregnancy so I feel they understand more about the changes a Mom's body goes through as the pregnancy progresses overall.
