So far, two PTs are telling me my son most likely needs to build up his core. You have seen me post in the past I'm sure. My 13 month old son rolled at the average time but still only drags himself on his belly although he can get up on all fours but once he goes forward he drops to his belly. He also just started going from laying down to sitting up. I got him started with PT at 11 months (eval, paperwork, etc) and he just started therapy this week. I know I have to work with him too which is hard being I also have a 3.5 year old. Has anyone's little one had a weak core and when did they reach their gross motor milestones? Thank you.
Re: Possibly weak core in 13 month old.
my son has a weak core, but it's b/c he has Down syndrome. his pt and i worked very hard to build it up by doing the following:
-working with him on an exercise ball
-having him sit on my legs as i would bounce him around (kinda the same idea as the exercise ball)
-every time i would pick him up from a diaper change or just off the floor, i would help to do a side sit up (so he's not just doing regular sit ups)
-i take him to a bounce house place and as he sits, i bounce around him so he has to constantly use his tummy muscles to keep himself up.

My dd (20 months) has a weak core (trunk) and I firmly believe she has cerebral palsy. We are going for testing and hope to get answers soon.
She does go to PT and the therapist uses a yoga ball a lot to help build her strength and balance. Her weak trunk is causing poor balance and posture.
We also encourage DD to do a sit up (I help her) as often as possible.
When she is old enough, we will start hippatherapy (horseback riding), excellent for core weakness.
We try and make her reach for things across her body, which works the oblique muscles.
Do they know why your DC has a weak core? I am finding, unfortunately, that it never seems to be as simple as a weakness
There is usually an underlying problem that is causing it.
