High-Risk Pregnancy

Joining your club :-( Heart problems

Hello all, I'm new here. I'm wondering if anyone here has anything similar to what I have?

I was diagnosed with tachycardia (fast heart) about 10 years ago and was placed on metoprolol. I've had occasional moments where I passed out in the past, but now that I am pregnant it has gotten worse. My heart beats as fast as my lil one (and that is with meds)! Anyway, I have fainted twice the past few weeks after an episode of my heart racing. Now I'm told that I will have to have ablation surgery on my heart after the baby is born and I'm now considered high risk. Cardiologist concerned about 3rd trimester and delivery. I most likely will need a c/s too. I have my level 2 u/s in a few weeks. If I faint one more time, I will be placed on bed rest. I'm only 15 wks! Talk about a bummer doctors appointment!

Anyone with something similar or on metoprolol?

  • Gosh that is rough!  I do not have any experience with this but I wanted to say hi and tell you "welcome" to our club.  There are a lot of nice girls on this board (unfortunately) who can help your days go by faster should you be placed on bedrest.  We have a daily bedrest check in also which may help you to get to know some of us better. I hope you can make it far before or if you have another fainting episdoe.  Hang in there.  Does your cardiologist say if this has any effect on the LO?  Was your hr this high before pregnancy?

  • I do not have anything similar to your experience either but wanted to say welcome. I know you must be scared. I hope your fainting spells ease up and you can make it a while before you have to go on bed rest. I am interested to hear too if your high HR will have any effect on your LO. I hope not, you do not need any additional stressors! Hang in there and keep us posted as things progress!
  • The concerns are that if I faint and i could fall on baby and the medication I'm on can cause IUGR. As for labor, they don't even want me to start having major contractions bc my heart could end up causing a fatal arrhythmia. I actually work in the hospital and work 70hrs/wk so she's trying to get me to slow it down a bit. Thanks for the support.

Not to make that sound lightly at all...but I am glad it doesn't seem to have any other effects on the baby.  I hope you can make it far and then schedule a c/s so LO arrives safe and sound and you are monitored closely.  I'm sure it's a bummer to know this far in advance you will be having a c/s but hang in there.  Can I ask what you do in the hospital?  I also work in a hospital, actually in the NICU.  I haven't been there since 31 weeks though when I was placed on bedrest.  I can't say I miss working but I do miss my friends!

  • I'm a 4th year medical student, so taking time off means I'm not going to graduate with my class in may. I usually wouldn't care except for the fact that my husband is a resident and he will be moving to another state next June for his 2nd year of residency. I couldn't live apart with a new baby just so I could finish my last year, but I also must finish b/c I owe $180,000 in student loans (and worked my butt off).  Having a baby in medical school was a tough decision for us b/c we knew it would be hard work. We lost our first baby and we are both getting older. We were tired of always putting our life on hold for school. Everything was working well since he was going to be able to finish his residency near my family after I graduated. My doctor's concern is that if something bad happens to me it could secondarily hurt the baby. I'm going to try to take it easy so my lil one can hang in there as long as possible. Thanks for the support!
  • hi-I've never posted on this board before, but saw your heart related post so I figured that I would respond. I also am on metoprolol to help with tachycardia. I had open heart surgery at 3 months and ever since I got pg, I've been noticing more bouts with tachycardia. I knew going into it that my valve would need to be replaced at sometime, but my Cardio is now saying that I may need a defibrillator implanted about 6 months after the baby is born as well.

I haven't gotten to the point that you have in terms of passing out, but I do get the racing of the heart which is very unnerving! Since I started on Metoprolol, the tachycardia has been a little better but not much. It is not sustained which is good and at this point my doctor is still saying a vaginal birth is ok. I have a hard time with this because I do notice when I start to strain myself physically I get more episodes....I guess we'll see what happens.  I'm sorry I don't have much advice, but wanted to say GL!!
