How to wean from swaddling?

Hi Ladies,

My DD has started rolling over a few weeks ago. She loves being swaddled at night. We were putting her in the Halo Sleepsack. She would sleep about 6 or more hours straight at night (sometimes STTN). However, since she has started rolling over I can no longer swaddle her. Any suggestions?  She is now only sleep about 4-5 hours straight.

How do you wean a baby from swaddling?

TIA!

Re: How to wean from swaddling?

  • With DS when he started rolling over to wean him from swaddling, we only swaddled his bottom half and left his arms out.  We did that for a week or two, then quit completely.  It actually was a very easy process for us.  Good luck!

  • we literally just stopped and moved to the sleep sack.  I am not sure she even noticed to be honest...  It is fun in the morning she wakes up and talks to her mobile.  When I go in, at first all I see are her bagged feet in the air :)

  • Thanks!  I bought one of the bigger sizes Halo sleep sacks that is more like a blanket and it does not wrap around her. Her arms are completely free. She's only been using it for about 3 nights and she is only sleeping about 4-5 hours straight in it. Hopefully she will be better in 2 weeks like your baby.

  • She could also be waking because she learned to rollover and she is practicing her new skill.  Sleep isn't linear - it gets better and worse over time.

Also, she can still wear a sleep sack even if she's rolling.  My DD wore a sleepsack until she was almost a year old.

  • we are in the process of weaning at the moment (though not because of rolling over).  we started with one arm out and that is working so far.

    good luck!

We did it cold turkey. It made for a rough couple of nights but I think she's getting more used to it.
