Chili peppers - ode to the jalapeno (health benefits - YIPEE!)

Ok... obviously I'm obsessed with jalapenos these days. I can't stop eating them or talking about them in here! lolol So I actually looked up the health benefits and low and behold I was VERY happy to read what I did.

After reading this I can see why maybe I haven't had any headaches or indigestion.  Or maybe I'm just lucky who knows lol

Chili peppers are extremely healthy for you, and should be included in your regular diet. Here's why.

Chili Peppers Fight Migraine Headaches and Sinus Headaches

Studies show that chili peppers can provide pain relief for migraine and sinus headaches. Capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers hot, is known to inhibit a key neuropeptide, Substance P, that is the key brain pain transmitter. Go capsaicin!

Chili Peppers Prevent Sinusitis and Relieve Congestion

Capsaicin once again! The pepper heat helps to stimulate secretions that aid in clearing mucus from your nose, combatting nasal congestion. It also contains antibacterial properties that help fight chronic sinus infections.

Chili Peppers Fight Cancer

Capsaicin not only causes the tongue to burn, it also drives prostate cancer cells to kill themselves, according to studies published in the March 15 issue of Cancer Research.

According to the research, capsaicin induced approximately 80 percent of prostate cancer cells growing in mice to follow the molecular pathways leading to apoptosis. Prostate cancer tumors treated with capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in non-treated mice.

"Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture," said Dr. Lehmann, M.D., Ph.D. "It also dramatically slowed the development of prostate tumors formed by those human cell lines grown in mouse models."

Chili Peppers Help Lower High Blood Pressure

Eating chili peppers are naturally high in vitamins A and C, and also bioflavinoids. They help strengthen our blood vessels, which makes them more elastic and better able to adjust to blood pressure fluctuations.   • Holy Heartburn Mama!  How on earth are you eating those?  I would OD on calcium with the amount of Tums I would be consuming after eating chili peppers.

    I DONT KNOW!! It's seriously an anomally!!! Hey you never know til you try. I eat the ones that are pre-sliced and come in a glass jar. They look like pickeled jalapenos.  I think the company name is Mezetta.

    I use serrano in both my guac and my pico de gallo. They are fabulous!!

  • oooh thanks for sharing!  I lovelovelove jalepenos!  The jarred pickled ones rock.  You can add them to anything!  Refried beans, burgers, nachos, you name it.  And there are health benefits too?!  Best news ever. 
  • I too have a love for jalapenos! I did know this info, as I am a nut about knowing the nutritional value of all foods.

    The encyclopedia of healing foods is a great tool to have.  It has EVERYTHING in it and what its benefits to the body are.

    Dh would argue that the chili pepper does not give you heart burn. he found that info somewhere.

    Of course, I get heartburn form bananas....at least i did pre=pg and don't seem to now. So who knows? Eat up the chiles!

    FYI, I haven't had any heartburn from the chilis or spicy food I've eaten either.
