Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Ear Piercing, the good, the bad, the ugly...

I'm sure this is a drama, possibly flame-worthy post, but I'm curious.  What are everyone's opinion on piercing their baby's ears?  DH really want to, it's a cultural thing for him...I'm iffy, and wondering whether or not to do it.  If we do, when should we do it?!  Okay, go!  Flame, opinion, whatever, let's hear it!

Re: Ear Piercing, the good, the bad, the ugly...

  • I personally am going to leave it up to DD.  If she asks for them, we'll get it done.

  • I had mine pierced when I was a baby, and considered getting DD's while I was still pregnant with her. DH is dead set against it, so we'll wait till she's able to ask for them herself.

  • I had my ears pierced when I was really little.  But now when I see it on other babies, I just don't like it.  I think it looks weird.  That being said, I won't be getting DD's ears pierced.  If she wants to have them done when she's older, we'll consider it, but for now there's no reason to.

  • if we ever have a dd, we'll wait until she is older.  the rule in my family was you could get them once mom and dad felt like you could care for them on your own.  i was 5, my sister was 10.

  • I don't think it's that big of a deal. We pierced DD ears at 10 weeks and I love them.

  • I'll be doing it in the next few weeks.  I don't think this should be flameworthy at all.  It is a cultural thing.  I'm Hispanic and I had my ears pierced 3 days after I was born (I was born in a Latin American country where this is standard).  Anyway, if you do it, I would wait until LO is 4 months.  I heard that's the standard amount to wait.
  • It's not cultural for us, but we plan on getting them done in a few months.

I had mine done when I was 4 because I begged- and because my mom chickened out when I was a baby. Because I wasn't old enough to care for them myself and keep my hands off, they got infected alllll the time.

If DD has them when she is a baby, I can control it, take care of them and when she is older she will never know the difference.

If she doesn't like or want them when she is older, she can take them out and they will close up. It's not that big of a deal.

  • We got DD's ears pierced the day after her 4-month shots. I got mine pierced when I was a baby. Nothing traumatic, she cried for a few seconds, I gave her a bottle and everything was fine. No problems with keeping them clean, and thankfully, she has never, never, tried scratching at them or pulling them out.

  • I was 5 and remember asking for it and it was a birthday gift. I will wait until she asks as well.

I think it's very cute though on baby girls but want her to have the same experience I had. I remember being very excited when I got it done.

  • When I was pregnant, I was all for it.  DH is Mexican and it's a cultural thing  for him.  His sister even got her earrings as a gift.  Now that she's here, I'm afraid of hurting her.  DH doesn't think it's a big deal, but I'm scared!
  • I got mine done when I was 10 months...I took my 1st dd around 9 months and I will do the same with this dd. I like pierced ears on baby girls and I don't regret piercing my dd's ears.

Its easy to take care of them at this age since you already clean their ears after baths. Plus, they aren't perfect at grasping tiny objects so she never played with her earrings.

My dd cried for seriously 3 seconds tops and my mom said I never cried.

  • I had mine pierced when I was a baby and I am not traumatized from it.  We got DD's done right after 3 months.  She barely cried and they have been so easy to clean and take care of.  My niece had hers done at age 2 and it was awful! She constantly played with them, pulled them out, and they stayed infected.

I don't regret the decision at all.  I think she looks super cute!
