Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone want to discuss 16 and Pregnant?

When I first heard about the show I didn't think it was a great idea for MTV to air something like that. I thought it would just glorify being pregnant. I have watched 5 or so episodes and I have mixed feelings about it now. It definitely shows some of the isolation and tough responsibilities with it. But, it is also showing girls dropping out of HS, sitting around watching tv, living with their boyfriends, etc. I just don't know if some 16yo would be able to look past the "fun" stuff and look at all of the responsibilities that come with having a child.

Agreed.  Especially the one with the cheerleader, they made her labor look so easy!  I think it's a stupid show and it annoys me I dont even watch the commercials lol

  • I thought it sounded like a horrible idea too. I think MTV has done a good job of not glorifing it.  Most of the girls shown have pretty immature boyfriends so I hope teen girls can see that. I would be sitting my daughter in front of this week's Dr. Phil before this 16 and pg though.

  • I've watched a few shows.....
I don't think it shows enough of how hard being a MOM is and being PG.
Or stressing over EVERYTHING - Diaper/Wipes/formula etc.
Thier parents are there to pick up the pieces...

  • I think the first episode and the episode with the cheerleader were two good episodes.  In the first one, that girl continued with school and really busted her a$$ to work hard.  It showed how alone she felt and how her loser of a boyfriend did nothing with the baby.  The cheerleader episode, I thought, showed how a shallow little girl had to step up because, although, her mom was letting her live at her house, she was the one to do most of the work at night and such.  Also, she wasnt getting the chance to go out with friends etc.

I think it would be more beneficial if these girls had their babies like a year or two ago and we saw how their lives were changed now.  Like if they were still with their boyfriends and such.  Right now, these girls only have babies 2-4 months old.

  • I have only seen a couple of episodes (one yesterday afternoon in fact) and I think most of the time, MTV is doing an ok job of showing that it is not all fun and games.  Maybe it is just because I am older, but I find myselft wanting to shake these girls and get them away from the loser men they procreated with.  I do think they show quite a bit of the isolation and the things these girls miss out on in their own childhood by having babies so early.  I missed Dr. Phil but I can only imagine what he had on.
  • The fun stuff? It shows girls who don't want to drop out of high school, having to drop out. It shows girls having to do piles of laundry, the cooking, cleaning, taking out the trash, while their stupid boyfriend skips off too hang with his friends. The last half of any show is majorly depressing to me.

I don't think it's too great at warding off pregnacy though. These girls get attention, and there are a lot of girls who despertly want that, good or bad.

This is the episode Im watching right now.  They sort of glazed over the fact she lost her friends, people were talking about her, she changed schools.  THAT is the part these girls need to see along with video of REAL painful birth and middle of the night feedings.  I wanted and tried for my baby but its not a cake walk  and teenage girls need to see its not all glamorous and kids are work, not a fun accessory!

  • is the cheerleader episode the one where the girl asks her mom what the chances are of her helping out in the middle of the night? And, the mom replies that "she needs her sleep." IF that is it, then I only caught a little bit of it...

    Yes

Because it doesn't reflect the hardships of being a full-time parent, I think  teens will see past the shows true purpose and will still want children.
