Baby Names

Name Dilemma

I never really thought I'd have kids.  I really like the name Benjamin so I named my dog that.  Well, my dad fell in love with the dog so now it's his.  And now I am pregnant with a boy.

We're naming the baby John because it's a family name on my husbands side, his name is John, his dad's name, grandpa, etc. (they all have different middle names so they aren't John Sr, John Jr. or anything like that.)  However, we may call baby by his middle name instead of John, like my husband does.  (His name is John Andrew and he goes by Andy.)

My problem is this: Benjamin is the only name so far that both DH and I like.  We're just worried my family will laugh or think it's stupid because my dad has a dog named Benjamin.
We are still looking through baby name books trying to find other names we actually agree on.

What do you think?

if you really like the name benjamin, then use it.  i'll be honest though, if my dad had a dog named benjamin i would try REALLY hard to find another name that my husband and i liked for our child.

This. My cat was named Benjamin. I think it's a cute name too.?

  • How about Bennett? Close to Benjamin but different--nn could still be Ben if you like that.

    I also like Beckett.

  • My aunt got a dog long before she had my cousin and named it Benjamin (her favorite name.)  My cousin's name is Benjamin.  Maybe because I have always known my cousin, it doesn't seem like the weirdest thing in the world to me.  I do think it's funny that it's the same name, though!
  • My dog is a member of my family, and would be even if my parents took him on.  And everyone knows his name.  If I named my son that, it would definitely lead to a lot of teasing and laughter...and I just wouldn't do it, since it's HIS name.  I would keep looking - there are plenty of names that you haven't used already for a member of your family.  :-)
  • I was named after a dog.  Eventually, the dog passed away and no one ever mentioned it - except at my wedding when my little brother made a joke about it.  I got over it ;).

Go for it!!!  BTW, I love the name Benjamin.  Start calling the dog Benji.

  • My aunts favorite name was Abby. She got a cat before she was married and named her Abby. Shortly after she got married and got pg. She had a girl and named her Abby. So there were 2 Abbys in the house for a while.

Personally I wouldn't name a baby after one of my pets but that's just me. If you like the name then go for it!

I had a similar problem.  I wanted to name my DD Grace (after an Irish historical figure), but hadn't told anyone other than DH.  A month after I got PG my dad named his dog Grace (for religious reasons).  I was really bummed, but just couldn't use the name.
  • My name is Sarah.  My mom's best friend had a white lab named Sarah.  No one ever made fun of me about it and when I was little I thought it was pretty cool because I loved the dog.
  • If the dog doesn't even live with you anymore, I don't see the problem.  If you both like the name, go for it.
  • Use it if you really want it.
