What Does STRONG vs. WEAK Ovulation Actually Mean?

I know the result of weak ovulation=poor corpus luteum development and early breakdown, but what exactly makes makes ovulation strong vs. weak?  I don't mean what are the causes (some unknown, some hormones are off, etc.), but how exactly is it weak vs. strong - like is the egg insufficiently developed?  Does it not shoot out into the fallopian tube with enough force?  Is the follicle just not strong?  I am totally taking stabs in the dark here b/c I don't really get it.

  • No answers here, but thanks so much for asking this question! I was just googling this today because I've never really heard a full explanation.

  • My RE explained my weak O like this - he said my body gears up to O and I produce LH, but it never gets really high and my egg sorta just falls out - there is no surge.  I never had ovulation pains or egg white CM either.  In my case, he doesn't think my egg lives very long either.  I'm not really sure on how he came to that conclusion, I think it was a combo of my low progesterone and explaining how I would get peaks on my CBEFM but I never got pregnant.  Clomid helped with all of that for me.

Interesting, maybe that's why I never get a strong, full +OPK.  I usually end up just putting a + when it was the darkest but it's hardly ever as dark as the control line.

  • Hi Chaucer,

If you don't mind my asking, what were your progesterone levels prior to taking the Clomid? Mine was a 10.1 and then a 12.1, and my OBGYN seemed to think that was bad news and wanted me on Clomid. But my RE doesn't seem worried at all....

  • I should add that I also get peaks on the CBEFM, and no cervical mucas...

Not chaucer but my doctor told me that anything over 3 means ovulation occured, but a progesterone level over 10 on a non medicated cycle is actually a good level. On a medicated cycle they like to see it over 15. My non medicated level was 7.45 and on 50mg Clomid my level was 6.95. We raised my Clomid dose to 100mg to hopefully get a higher progesterone level this cycle.
