So finally I was able to see my LC at the hospital today. Good news is we do NOT have a latching problem. yay! However since I do have significant nipple trauma she wants me to just pump that side to allow it time to heal. Every time we nurse or pump it opens up. She also discovered that the flange (standard) was too small and causing my nipple to re-open. So I'm to pump as long as necessary to allow the crack to close and hopefully scab over. I was also instructed to keep my nipple moist and not to let air dry. They are now promoting moist wound healing.
Another thing that I suspected is I have a strong let down reflex that Landon has to compensate for. She told me when I make a "C" with my fingers and thumb to use more compression when latching and also hold the C shape longer which cut down on that initial latching pain. This slows the flow down.
Thanks for everyone's help!
Re: Finally saw an LC re: cracked nipple
yay!
i've been wondering if my standard flanges are too small... pumping is more uncomfortable than anticipated. i might need to follow your lead and go back to my LC.
hope your poor nipple heals soon!
