  • I napped with Connor on my chest and still do during the day.  At night he only sleeps well when swaddled and the other night that wasn't even working.  I ended having to sleep in the recliner with him.  I don't really have any tricks.  Joys of motherhood right!?!  Do you have the lanolin for the boobies?  My nips ended up getting a little chapped and that helps for sure!  You're doing great!!!  Hope you get some rest! :)

This exactly, except now Max sleeps in my lap, on the Boppy. Do you have a bassinet that you can put near the couch? I slept in the recliner, in the living room, for 2 weeks due to my c/s. Having the bassinet next to me really helped and allowed me to put the baby down, once he was asleep (if only for 5 minutes to pee, or refill my water bottle).

You're doing great!! I 2nd the lanolin and heating pads help w/ let down!

PS: You'll get really good at the one-handed typing! I'm doing it right now!!

  • It's funny b/c I just don't remember. I do remember my mom saying "you're going to have to put that baby down sometime" so I must have held onto him a lot.  :)  I do remember naps on my chest or in the Moby Wrap.  But I think he also napped in the bouncy seat a lot.  Also he liked to be swaddled too.

I was terrible at napping when he napped though.  It's like I don't want to waste my time with napping.  But then I stay up and waste my time with doing nothing.  So I'm not good to ask about it.

  • We were/are having this same problem!  It has gotten better bit by bit over the last week.  Basically we have to swaddle him and then hold him until he's in a deep sleep (not squirming, regular breathing).  Then I gently put him down and if I'm lucky I get an hour.

Most of my sleep has occurred when the grandparents (or we take turns napping)  are over and able to hold him for a couple hours!  It's rough, but I see enough improvement to feel a little bit optimistic that it won't be forever.

I don't think he was put down at all in the first 2-3 days.

Oh, and the boob situation gets a lot better too...day 3-5 were miserable...now I'm just a little sore...but thankfully  not engorged anymore.

  • I had to think about it, but its all coming back to me now!   I definitely couldnt put him down to nap, actually to this day if he is sleeping and I try and put him in bed he will wake up unless its night time.  I would just nap with him on my chest (they dont let you do that for very long so take advantage!  I really miss it =( )   If you have a recliner that is the best option =)

  • Only if it was into something that swung or vibrated... swing or bouncy seat. Did you read Happiest Baby on the Block? I can't remember all the 5 S's, but does he tolerate the swaddle well? Swaddle him tightly first, then pick him up and shhhh him and swing him at the same time. I'd also suggest a paci (the "suck" S) if you are letting him have one, but it may or may not mess up his BF latch. DD only let us put her down/fell asleep when we did some combination of these things. It was 3-4 months before she slept out of a swaddle and not in the swing. Just keep trying all the combos till you find the one that works!?
  • In order to put Cruz down we had to put him in the swing or the bouncer.  I did sleep with him cuddled up to me quite a bit the first few weeks.  One they get a little older they will let you put them down a bit better!

  • DS2 naps only in the Moby Wrap, swing, or bouncy seat.  He hasn't yet napped in the PNP or his crib.  The Moby Wrap takes the least effort on my part to get him to sleep, although then I'm stuck with him on me for a few hours.  But at least I can get things done while wearing him.

Have you tried Gerber's heat/cold breast packs?  Target sells them.  You can freeze or microwave them.  They seemed to help me at first.  Also gel pads (Medela, Gerber, etc sell them) helped if its your nips that are sore/tender.

  • yes, we too went thru that unable to put him down phase  (Heck, we are going thru that again at almost 2!)

I found a trick that helped us 100%!

I put a hot water bottle in her bassinette under a blanket right where she would be sleeping.  THen we were finished with bath time etc... we'd remove the hot water bottle, and lay her down.  The warm spot helped her to think we still had her and this worked like a charm for us!

  • Thanks so much everybody! Guess what - I'm typing two-handed! The moby seems a little complex for my bungled mind to learn right now, but I realized I had a hotsling. So I dug it out and he's so happy. Haven't tried putting him down from here, but when I *do* have energy to do something, the sling makes it easier.

I'm glad that maybe the sleeping thing is a learning curve for him too and we won't be stuck holding him forever. :)

  • oh gosh no - in a while, you will look back and miss having a sweet little baby who sleeps on you.   Just think, he just spent 9 months IN you.   Sleeping on his own in a big giant cold bed is quite a difference.  He needs you and your body heat right now.

Here's a video to watch for teh Moby.  Way easier than trying to read it in the book.  Once someone shows you, it's so easy.  And it really needs to be tighter than you'd think.   It will stretch/give a little with the baby in it.  But it's so snug and wonderful that you can even lean over and unload the dishwasher without having to put your hand on the baby.

  • 3 months before Logan slept w/o one of us. Looking back it was a bit much. I mean every night one of us was on the couch with the kid on top. He also slept a lot in the swing. Liam would sleep right next to me on the boppy on his stomach and I had to sit right next to him cause he was on his belly and it freaked me out. I used to just lay there and smell both of them.
