Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you move on from just fruits and veggies?

Hi!  My son is just over 6 months.  Right now he eats lots of fruits and veggies and oatmeal.  He loves the stage 2 purees.  He usually eats oatmeal+fruit for breakfast and then a veggie+brown rice puree for dinner (or veggie+oatmeal b/c he won't eat it if its watery).  We are soon going to add lunch too.

I have been thinking oabout trying like the mac and cheese stage 2 purees or the risotto ones from gerber for dinner just to add variety... Does it matter when he tries these?  Also- when did you start the puree meats?  I'm scared to feed him anything but fruit or vegetables!  Also- do you heat you LO's foods? TIA!

  • I don't think they recommend meat until 8 months.  Proteins are hard for their tummy if started too early.

  • ive heard 9 months for proteins, but we see our pedi today so Ill ask more.

  • Thats what I thought as well, but of course my mother thinks "its fine!".  We see our pedi next week so I was planning to ask then.... Just seeing what others were doing.

Do you only feed fruits and veggies?

Oh, tell me about it.  My mom talks about how they used to feed us meat at 6 weeks.  Can you imagine??

I added yogurt when he was 7 months and just started cottage cheese.  They are considered easier on their tummy.  I also have started teething biscuits and cheerios.

  • Right now we are only doing the foods you are doing.  We started foods at 6 months so we are a little behind anyway.  Our pedi said not to give him any "real" foods until after his 9 month appt, but that after 6 months he could have whatever is in those stage 2s.  Meat, etc.

  • I noticed around 6 months DD was chewing her thicker purees so I got her some puffs and yogurt melts. Once I read the ingredients to yogurt melts I just decided to get plain whole milk yogurt from our organic grocer(you can also do Yobaby, just call your pedi to check). Now that she chews I also chop up fruits and she eats those to practice her pincer grasp. We don't do pasta/meat yet. I still add a TBSP of oatmeal to her morning fruit.

Echowysp- I was looking in my Dad's baby book(surprised to find out he had one!) and it said "Jeffrey now drinks orange juice at 5 weeks old." and "Fruit at 6 weeks." there were some others but I can't remember, he definitely had meat early too. I was talking to my Nan last week and she said back then they didn't have "rules." She just did what her mum told her to do.

  • My LO "chews" his purees too and he has been eating solids since about 4.5 months... I've offered puffs (cut in half) but he hasn't been interested so far so i didn't push it.  We did try yogurt for breakfast, but he got a rash.  I'm not sure if its a coincidence or reaction though, so we have stopped yogurt and maybe we will try it next month.

That is very similar to how dd started solids. Have you diced avocado or banana and tried to feed him little pieces?

  • I was actually thinking about having him try banana today!
  • There is a good chart on wholesombabyfood.com for what foods to eat. 6-8m is fruits and veggies only.

We started with veggies since babies reject them easier. Then fruits.
