Creative mommas please come in!

We are hoping to get DD and SS' new room at least most of the way finished before DD gets home from her BF's on Sunday.  I need some creative ideas for decorating on a budget! The room they are in is HUGE, big enough that we were able to take their bunk beds apart and put one on each side of the room, with at least 8 feet in between them.  In between the heads of their beds there is a big bay window with a built in cedar chest that doubles as a bench.

They agreed on painting the room a shade of orange.  SS and DH have been collecting hot wheels cars pretty much since SS was born.  DH is building a race track that will hang on the wall on SS' side of the room and they will hang his cars on it.  We are going to try to find hot wheels or some kind of cool race car bedding for him.  DD says she wants princesses on her side of the room...which pretty much just means "girly stuff".  She has pink and purple princess bedding right now and says she wants to keep that.

Any suggestions on how to tie these two themes together to create an awesome room for them? With DH not working right now, 3 kids already and a baby on the way we are definitely looking for "budget friendly" decorating ideas!

  • Let me ponder......but my very first suggestion is NOT orange.  A more neutral shade for two reasons, one you can accessorize each side easier and two resell.

I know that you are not moving anytime soon, but if/when the time comes, who wants to repaint with three kids running around.

  • And I say this from experience.  DH just HAD to let SS paint his room a very deep, dark blue.

Even with good staging, it will always look 2x smaller than it really is.  And to repaint will mean at least 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of the paint to really cover the blue.

And I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE painting rooms.  It is my favorite way to get to ZEN.

  • Easy. Go get a ceiling mount curtain bar that will go down the middle to act as a seperator. Actually I would get two. One for a set of curtains for each of them.
On his side put something that matches his "theme", and do something frilly and fun on her side.

This way they can have some definition to their spaces, and it will allow them some privacy as well should they want it.

Is this a dark orange, or a pale sherbety orange?  I would think that a pale orange would not be too bad, dark orange-yikes.

The color swatch we've got right now is a pale sherbety orange...called "hapiness".  But we haven't purchased the paint yet so I am still open to suggestions!

  • I have been thinking about this al day.
I would veto the keeping of the pretty princess bedding-start fresh.
This would look great in an orange little girls room. The sheets/comforter have her favorite purples and pinks, but also have orange and blue.
This could be a good complement for the boys side since it is also dots and stripes.

    Or I would do this
    Boys
    Girls

I would stay away from strong themes. Pick bedding that coordinates. So, the solids-girl in pale purple, boy in blue. Stripes in both, polka dots for both, plaid for both-does not have to be the same colors just same shapes. You don't want huge fat stripes on one side of the room, and little stripes going in the opposite direction  on the other.

They can each have one picture and a unique lamp, but again the lamps should be similar.
    Accesories that might work:

    A

    B

  • xmaryrickx, you are AWESOME!  Thank you so much for taking the time to find all of this! I absolutely love these ideas.  I couldn't get the first girl's link to open though...it took me to a craigslist add for a dog, lol.  My computer has a mind of it's own!
  • Depending on how old they are...

there are a ton of girly things that combine orange and pinks-more like a hot pink, but they're out there... towels, decorations, etc... My SD-who is 10-loves orange and red, but we already painted her room 1/2 Barbie pink 1/2 Barbie purple, so she's stuck w it for a wee bit more... however, I did add some orange to it to appease her... Ikea had these 2 ft round rugs in orange... Lots to do w polka dots w orange and pink and purple-or plaid as stated above...

Even if the walls are a sherbet-y orange, I think it'll look great!  You can def combine those together!  Would love to see what you do!

(sidenote: I had to do the boys room a grey-they wanted Star Wars, the Clone Wars, theme... not regular SW... ugh....) got some light sabers hanging up and some pics from the 'movie'?... Silvery light fixture... )

  • I had to go back and find the first one as it was my favorite (and no your computer is not wonky, it was the last thing on my clipboard before my "shopping" trip for you!!!!).

    This is just too pretty.

  • Damn my links sucked.

This is the boys version of the pink solid one I posted above. It is blue and orange and could be perfect.

Since she wants to keep her pink/purple bedding:

What about buying storage cubbies for him and her for each side of the room?  You can buy the cubes to go in them in coordinating colors for him and her that will bring in orange from both sides.  His cubbies in primary colors (red/blue/orange) and hers in sherbets (pink/lavender/orange).

Bring in some "girlie" things for her side that has touches of orange...pink/purple/orange patterned sheets and pictures/posters/wall-stickers with flowers or something that ties in all three colors.

If you can talk her out of the pink/purple princess thing, a pink/orange color combination is very simple to work with for her, and blue/orange for him.  JCP, BB&B, Target, etc. all have one or more bedding sets in each color combination.

This is at least a start:  https://kidsthemebedrooms.com/shared-bedrooms/decorating-shared-bedrooms-for-boys-and-girls.html
