Probiotics that help with diaper rash?

XP from 0-3 mos- no one had any answers over there

Has anyone heard of this?  If so where do you get it, and how do you give it to LO?  I'd do anything to make sure she doesn't have to suffer through this rash again, we've been dealing with it for 3 weeks now!

Re: Probiotics that help with diaper rash?

  • We have used probiotics since DD was one month old (although we have been pretty lax about remembering lately!).  We didn't use it for diaper rash, but for tummy troubles...and it worked wonders!

Over here, they sell it in powder form.  You can either buy kids/babies sachets of it that you mix with a tiny bit of water or breastmilk (until it's paste-like) or powder that needs to be refrigerated.  We got the sachets at first.  They were vanilla flavored and DD loooooved it.  They stopped making them when she was around 4 months, so we had to switch to the refrigerated stuff, which isn't as yummy, but still did the job.

We just fed it to her on a spoon (mixed with a few drops of water) and she ate it right up.  But I've also heard of people just putting it on their finger and letting LO suck on it, or even rubbing the paste onto nipples before BFing.

Also, just curious...are you using cloth or disposable diapers?  If disposable, would you consider using cloth?  CDs ROCK and we haven't had a single bout of diaper rash ever while using them.  We're leaving on vacation tomorrow and she's in disposables already (so I can wash all her dipes) and she's ALREADY getting a red bum.  Just a thought, anyway :)

  • We were using the cloth when her rash first started, it started out this really faint pink just around where her butt cheeks go together.  Then it got the little points of a typical yeast rash. Since we are using Nystatin and before that another cream we switched to using some of the disposable diapers that people had given to us before she was born.  (She's almost outgrown the sizes already so we needed to use them up anyways).  Her rash is getting close to gone, but still there, I just don't want to ruin her cloth (grobaby) with any of the creams.  I've been putting her in them occasionally b/c I like them so much better, but only when it's not time to put the cream on.
  • I used Probiotics when DD was on antibiotics to prevent a yeast infection. They came in little packets ( like Crystal Light on the go) in the children's section at CVS. You just mix it with milk. It seemed to help. Are you sure it is a diaper rash and not a yeast infection?

  • We use Bio Gai probiotic drops - we ordered them from the Walmart pharmacy...you don't need an Rx but they don't carry them... Any whole foods type market should carry them in the refridgerated section. We have also used the powedered packets before as well.

I hope it gets better soon!

  • I don't really have an answer for  you from experience but remember a friend telling me she puts breast milk on her daughter's tushy. I've also heard of using yogurt which has probiotics in it.

  • It is a yeast diaper rash :)  That's why I was wanting to do the probiotics.  Since it's yeast I don't want to put the breastmilk on it b/c of the sugar in it.    Thanks for your help!
  • We had issues with yeast and the thing that worked best was keeping my hairdryer in the nursery and blow-drying at every diaper change. Making sure the area was a dry as possible kept the rash from returning.
  • yeast rash is the WORST! we had DD in sposies for months trying to kick the tail end of a lingering yeast rash.

what did it for us: 1) washing ALL her laundry w/75 drops of grapefruit seed extract in the wash, bathtowels, clothes, burp cloths, sheets, everything she touches. 2) naked time, as often as you can. 3) coconut oil as a diaper cream. it is a natural antifungal and i really think it is what sealed the deal for us. the OTC yeast creams would just get us about 80% healed, and then it would come back.

  • oh, and we do use probiotics, but we didn't start them for her yeast rash. we have gluten/soy sensitivities to watch in our house, so we use the infant probiotics from klaire labs. i think culturelle (now available in packets at places like cvs/wallgreens) is supposed to be good too.

her probiotic goop (we mix with EBM) is the ONLY food she's never refused off a spoon.

i've also heard of wiping the diaper area with a dilution of apple cider vinegar/water to kill yeast. i think it is hard to get a mix strong enough to do any good but not so strong that it burns tho.
