1st Trimester

Is there another name for NT scan?

My OB's office doesn't call it an NT scan and they asked me if I wanted a first trimester prenatal screening? Is this the same thing? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but they told me to go home and read this pamplet and let them know if I want it? It's something I want right??

  • I live in Canada.  Here they call it IPS (integrated prenatal screening).  There are 2 screenings which includes the ultrasound, bloodwork (trisomy, downs, and other genetic disorders).  I opting against the screenings and just getting the u/s.
  • My doctors office calls it an Early Risk Assessment, a 1st tri screening is probably the same. Ask them what it screens for and if it is DS or Trisomy risk then that = a NT scan.

Whether or not you want it is a person choice, many people choose to forgo it.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Only you can make the decision if you want the scan or not.  When I was on these boards the first time around I remember a lot of false positives and high percentages of chances of things being wrong (which is all they can tell you).  So then you spend the next 27-28 weeks worrying that your baby could have something wrong with it, when 99% of the time, the baby is fine.

For us, we knew that even if there was something wrong we wouldn't do anything about it so I opted not to have it.  I probably won't get it this time around either.

So like I said, you may want to discuss with your OB, and maybe do some research on your own.

    Good luck!

  • My OB calls it Sequential Screening. NT Scan is probably one part of the 1st Tri Screen.

I opted to do it. I had blood work followed by an U/S (NT scan) the next day. I'll go back in a month for more blood work.

Yes, first trimester screening is the NT scan. The perinatologist that does the NT scan for us calls it the Ultrascreen.
  • Thank you ladies for all your responses! You totally helped! =)
