Baby Names

Decided but now the drama...vent and questions

We found out on Tuesday that we are having a boy so we could finally start calling him by the name we decided on... Gaven Ryder... This morning I woke up and started looking at the name book again because Iwas having second thoughts about Ryder being his MN... I talked to FI and he said he still really liked it but that we should change the spelling of Gaven because he grew up being teased by his brothers about the spelling/pronounciation (GAY-VEN instead Gav-en, it is his MN). I said I didn't mind but what do you all think about the spelling of his name like this GAVYN RYDER.... too odd having the Ys? We like "YN" better than "IN".

So I went to my friend's house (who is also pg, about 4 weeks behind me) and she freaked out about the first name asking why we hated the baby... Then, when I said the MN, she began taunting even more. Does it really sound that bad? We really liked it. My mom, who is super conservative even likes the name we chose. Any suggestions?

I really don't understand spelled Gavin with a y, and yes it is too many y's.  The name itself is fine though.  I really like Gavin and Ryder is okay.

  • I don't think the name is horrible.  Perhaps your friend was overreacting...or maybe she likes it for her own kid? Ryder is nms but if that is what you like, I say go for it.
  • It sounds like your husband is named Gaven? I would spell it Gavin, if I were to use the name. It's nice, I like it. I don't think spelling it Gavyn will reduce Gayven taunts, if anything I think it would increase them, and I hate that spelling, it's awful.

As far as Ryder, I don't love it but I don't hate it. Maybe Gavin Robert? But please no Gavyn. (shivers)

  • Brothers are going to tease eachother no matter what their names are.  The traditional Gavin spelling is sooooooo much better.  The Y is really bad in general, and especially bad with Ryder.  Gavin Ryder is a great name though!

agreed. that spelling (gavyn) really looks like Gay-vin when viewed quickly. I think that's what you're trying to avoid.  Don't do it.

Yes, if you don't hate your baby spell it Gaven. Gavyn is awful and it is too many Ys.

Plus it doesn't really make sense how Gaven=Gay-ven but Gavyn doesn't. I think if anything having the Y there makes me think Gay-ven more so than Gaven.

ETA: I don't think there is anything with Ryder. Oh and I prefer Gavin.

my suggestion?  name your child whatever you want!

even though it wouldn't be my choice, gaven ryder isn't that bad.

  • I think the name sounds nice, but prefer the spelling Gavin. Adding the Y just seems like you are trying to make it "trendy".
  • I agree with op, and prefer the classic spelling "Gavin."  It's a nice name, imo

Ditto.  I never would have made the "Gay" connection until it was spelled Gavyn.  The "gay" jumps out ot me even more.

Gavin Ryder is fine.  PLEASE no "Gavyn".

I don't mind Gavin (it's fine, but trendy and I like classics) and I really dislike Ryder. It sounds trashy to me. Sorry, but maybe that's why your friend reacted strange? Gaven and Gavyn look bad.?

Ditto. If you really hate the way something is supposed to be spelled, pick another name.

  • if you spell it any way other than the real way (gavin) it will look like "gay" and with ryder as a middle name, that's just setting him up for a life of name-calling.

  • If you are set on that name, then tell your friend to screw off. When someone posts on this board that they have decided to use a name, I don't comment if I don't like it. They have already chosen it, so I respect that. If they are still deciding and want opinions, I'll give mine. I do prefer the spelling of Gavin if that helps.

  • My son's name is Gavin and I don't like any other spelling. Ryder is nms.
  • Does he seriously think it was the spelling that made his brothers do that? 'Cause it wasn't. It's because they were boys and boys do that stuff.

Leave it spelled the way his name is spelled. Putting a Y that close the GA is only going to reinforce the GAY idea.

Or a lucrative career in certain film genres.

Just kidding, but I honestly had missed this connotation before, but somehow, I bet the guys on his high school wrestling team wouldn't.

Same here, I like the sound of Gavin and Ryder together, just not the non-traditional spellings.

  • Gaven looks like raven, maven, and haven so he probably will be called Gay-ven possibly on the first day of school every year when the teacher doesn't know how to pronouce everyone's name yet.

I agree with everyone else, go with Gavin.

THIS^^^^ Please go without the Y. FWIW I think your friend is a jerk for saying that and behaving that way. Sure she can say she doesn't like the name but really, that tone is so rude!

  • I like the name Gavin but not with the Y.  The Y seems very feminine to me.  I prefer the spelling Gavin.  Ryder is a cute name too.  I have no idea why your friend was freaking out.  Even if the names were not her style, I definitely wouldn't consider them bad names at all.
