Any cloth diaper mamas not use wipes with every diaper change??

I read somewhere that when using cloth diapers that you don't need to use wipes with every wet diaper change because the urine actually has antibacterial properties.  I think it sounds gross, but wonder if anyone else has heard that of that?

  • I tried that. Twice. Both times my ds got a horrible rash. SO now I wipe his entire area with every diaper change.?

Curious, what were the results of your poll, and why don't you?

I wouldn't try that. ?Or you could just dry wipe? I wouldn't want to leave th urine on her skin.?

I use cloth wipes and when it is just urine, I usually just wet my wipe with ?water and wipe her with that. ?With poo, I use wipe solution because I want to make sure nothing is left.

  • I know a lot of people don't especially if they use disposable wipes because they are so harsh.  Since I use cloth and water I figure a quick cleanup is no big deal and better for him especially since we do a bath every 3 days or so.

  • From what little I understand - fresh urine can sterilize things, but when it's left to sit, especially in a dark, warm environment, it can play host to plenty of bacteria, etc.  We wipe (at least as much as we can as DS crawls away from us).

I had read in a magazine about urine being sterile and it isn't necessary at every changing. ?But (obviously) if there is even a tiny amount of poop to wipe.

I can't remember the exact numbers, but A LOT of us don't.

I think though more moms of boys don't than moms of girls?

  • That sounds similiar to the same thing I read, i just can't remember where it was.  I guess I just think that since I wipe after every pee I couldn't imagine not using wipes for DD, but if I were in a pinch (out of the house and no wipes available) I guess it wouldn't hurt??

  • I don't. Even when we used disposables we only use wipes when he's got a dirty diaper or if he's visibly damp from a soaked diaper. Really it's the same theory as tp - unless you use moist wipes every time you go to the bathroom it's basically the same thing.

I did this same poll awhile back too (great wives think alike) and I had the same results. I'm actually suprised that we seem to be the only ones this time. My poll it was like 80 - 20 for not wiping.

I did have to do without wipes this weekend (when I forgot to pack some), so when it was just a pee diaper, I went ahead and did without any wipes (otherwise I would have used napkins, TP or whatever I could find).  I think you'd probably be ok if you didn't do it very often, and you tried to make sure DC was completely dry before you put on the next diaper.  I don't know that I'd continuously do it, though.  And I'd be careful of doing it if you had a rather sensitive DC.

  • I have to wipe DD every time, other wise she gets horrible rashes and quick! However, I've skipped once or twice while out an w/o wipes...that's how I know about the rashes.
  • I use cloth wipes and my own solution but I still only wipe when there's poo.  Now I feel like I am supposed to be wiping every time?  But we haven't had any rashes yet so I must be doing something right.
  • I don't wipe after every pee diaper.  I don't not wipe after every pee diaper either.  Maybe every 3 or so?

  • I think there's a big difference in this depending on whether you have a boy or a girl.  We never use wipes if DS just has a pee diaper - urine is sterile - and he is mostly dry when I change him.  He has extremely sensitive skin and hardly ever has rashes.  I do wipe him in the morning since he's been sitting in his pee longer and we have had some ammonia issues there.

I know most people with girls wipe at every single change.

  • I only wipe if its a poop diaper or if she's super wet (like after overnight or a random super pee filled couple of hours).  I do let her completely dry out and I will say that she gets diaper rash more often when my husband takes care of her and he wipes after every diaper regardless of what is in it.
  • my MIL didn't wipe DS with just pee diapers and it irritated me so much. ?he also seemed to get very red after an afternoon w/MIL so i felt it was related. ?

warm, moist environments are a breeding ground for bacteria. ?my son's diapers are not somewhere i want things growing.....

  • I never wipe for pee diapers, and just use water for poo diapers.
