dumb question about internal?

Just wondering why people say their internal exams hurt and they bleed. Every time I have gone for my checkups since I had a rough pregnancy my doctor has just checked with her fingers, is an internal something else? Do they use some sort of tools? Sorry for being a dumb ass but no one has told me anything about this.?

Re: dumb question about internal?

  • nope they just use their fingers. for the ladies that have a posterior cervix (way in the back and hard to reach) it can be more painful. for me it really isnt that bad and i only spot a little bit afterwards.

  • I had my first one today and it didn't hurt at all, not even a bit uncomfortable. I was shocked! No bleeding or cramping either.

  • Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.  Mine never did at all w/ DD#1.  With DD#2 I spotted after wards a lot but no pain.  This time I get pain but no spotting (same Doc as #2).  They don't use a tool ever in my experience--how much pain could depend on length of their fingers & how high up your cervix is I would think.  Pain could be from how irritable/sensitive your area is, etc.

  • Thanks :) I was wondering why people have bleeding and say that it hurts so bad because it hasn't bothered me in the least bit.
  • Ive never bled (I know some people lose their MP after which is a little blood also) but they are uncomfortable just bc they have to push their fingers so far in but I find pap smears (or to be more specific, speculum) more painful fo sho
  • Well, this information is comforting... The bump has inspired in me an irrational fear of internals.

  • Here is a follow-up dumb question:

Um... how far do they stick their fingers up there?  I keep hearing the term "internal exam" strewn about, but my OB has never even mentioned it to me and I'm not quite sure what it entails....

  • My first two didn't hurt at all, but todays internal was extremely uncomfortable, it felt like she was using her whole hand. Ouch.
  • For the most part mine have not hurt.  I have been getting them for many weeks now.  But last week, after having 5 in the span of 30 hours while at the hospital they started to hurt.

As far as they can.  I've never bled, but I think they hurt.  Maybe my cervix is high or particularly sensitive...

Mine haven't hurt (just a little discomfort) and I haven't bled.  I think it depends on your doctor and your cervix position.

My first and only internal so far was 2 weeks ago.  It didn't hurt, there was just a lot of pressure- paps are way more uncomfortable.  Doc said I might spot or have some contractions but I didn't experience either.

Regarding how far up there, the point was to touch the cervix, and there was pressure because she had to really push to reach.  At the end of the day though its just the length of her finger.

Not any scarier than what you experienced to get you here to begin with! Big Smile

  • I had my third today (two earlier due to spotting and pelvic pain). None of them particularly hurt, and the doctor just checked with fingers. After today's, my discharge is a bit on the light brown side, but nothing significant.
