My parents really wanted to name my older sister Marcy. But, then their neice said the name with a New England accent (Maaah-cy), and they quickly changed their mind. She ended up being Danielle.
I was going to be Ryan if I were a boy (my name is Lauren). My twin sister was supposed to be a boy and was going to be Ashley. When she came out a girl, my mom decided to name her Lindsey because they apparently only like Ashley for a boy's name. I am so glad she is a girl.
My mom's favorite girl name was Jessica (it still is!) My dad wanted Julie or Elise. They went with Laura and I'm glad!
My dad wanted to name my brother Gregory (they went with Michael, my mom's all time favorite name- still is) so I'm sure if I was a boy that would have been my name. ?
I honestly didn't have a first name for the first day of my life. My parents couldn't agree on a first name. They decided to each choose a mn; Vera after my Mother's Grandmother and May after my Dad's favorite Aunt. MN was solved, but it took the Grandparents to decide on my name...I didn't have a possible boy name either...maybe I should have noticed the signs then that their marriage wasn't going to last?
My parents were going to name me Jered if I was a boy. They had several girls names picked out- Amber, Courtney, Brooke, Cory Lynn, and a few others, but my dad thought of Ashley at the last minute so they went with that (we lived out in the country where it was really uncommon). I'm happy with their choice .
With my younger sister, once again Jered was their first choice for a boy. My dad always liked the names Tracy and Addy Marie for a girl, but my mom didn't like either of them at the time. Her top choice for a while was Bridget, but they chose Kaitlin instead. I find it funny that Addy is such a popular nickname for girls now (it's also one of my favorites which would greatly please my father lol).
ETA: There are a lot of Lauras and Laurens in this thread! But I've known quite a few in real life so I guess that shouldn't be too surprising.
for me it was either nancy elizabeth (my maternal gradmother's name and my paternal grandmother's middle name cuz mary didnt flow)
or norman charles (maternal gradfather and paternal gradfather)
my sister was supposed to be a boy and get the norman charles but instead she is dorothy katherine (maternal aunt and mother's middle name)...they didnt even consider a girl name for her!
I was always going to be Brooke if I was girl. If I'd been a boy, I would have been Adam. Good think I was a girl - I would have been one of five Adams (between 2 classes) all through elementary school. My sister was going to be either Megan or Tara, but my parents wanted to pronounce it Ter-a, and were afraid she'd be called Tar-a, so they went with Megan. I always thought it was interesting they went with something fairly uncommon with me and then chose a Top 3 name for my sister.
If I were a boy, I would have been a Brian. If my sister was a boy, she would have been Lincoln Schuyler. My parents got me home from the hospital and called me Allison for a week before deciding I didn't look like an Allison.

My name is Lindsey and my sister's name is Lauren Ashley! I got a kick out of this!
Re: Poll- what were you *almost* named?

I was going to be an Abigail, or Rachel if I was a girl.
If I was a boy I was going to be Benjamin.
However, I got the name Rikki. I

I have two sisters, Sidney, and Amanda. FWIW, Amanda hates the nickname Mandy, she goes only by Amanda. However we call Sidney, Sid A LOT.
Boy - Ryan
Girl - my actual name is Kimberly. I was going to be Stephanie or Danielle.

My mom really pushed for Gwyneth. My dad said no because nobody would be able to spell it. Yet, he agreed to Aviva.
