Getting 6wk old on feed - wake - sleep schedule

I'm trying to get DD on a Feed - Wake - Sleep pattern but it's hard to keep her awake after she's eaten! She's 6 weeks old and lately has been falling asleep when she's finished with the bottle and sleeps for around 15 minutes and then wakes up. Any suggestions on how to keep her awake?

Re: Getting 6wk old on feed - wake - sleep schedule

  • this morning i put Samantha in her vibrating chair and turned on spongebob! she LOVED it. i didnt hear a pep out of her until it was over. she dictates when she has her awake period.

last night she was very grumpy because she didnt nap very well all afternoon. she would eat, sleep for 15 mins and be up. frustrating yes, but by 8pm we bathed her and then fed her like normal and she went down for the night and slept till 4am  had a 3oz and went back to bed until 8am then we had cuddle time(she wasnt quite awake but was very fussy in her crib) and we got up for the day at 9 and she ate.

  • Don't. She'll most likely put herself on a schedule/ pattern within the next month or so. Its easier to adjust their patterns/ schedule when they're a few more months older.

  • With DS we'd play - whether that be talking, tickling, reading a book, etc after he finished eating.  You might also try waiting to change her diaper until after she's eaten.  For DS at least, that's a sure fire way to get him to wake up.  At 6 weeks there'd be some feedings where the awake time would last 5 minutes, and others it'd be an hour.  We also aimed to get 15-20 mins if possible.  It's frustrating but I remember around 6-7 weeks is when my son started to stay awake more.
  • As soon as DS has finished eating or has dozed off I change his diaper to try to wake him up and then I try to stimulate him...I lay him on the floor and talk to him, read, tickle him, etc.  Sometimes he is awake for an hour or so and sometimes I only get about 10 or 15 minutes and he's ready for a nap.
