Pregnant after 35

Lovinox

(I'm cross posting again Wink )

anyone put on Lovinox for blood with "borderline protein s and protein c" levels? Might as well be Japanese he's speaking to me but it has to do with the way in which my blood clots. He explained the levels could be "due to the pregnancy or due to previous miscarriages (from 2.5 yrs ago?)". That doesn't help me much.

Not to discount the diagnosis but, my Peri is, let's just say "thorough" (DH says "likes to cover his a$$") and always gives me the worst case scenario. I really don't like the guy and my gut says to question the need for these injectables (which would be taken in addition to the baby aspirin I'm currently taking). Not wanting to go against a doctor's recommendation, I have a call in to my OB for a 2nd opinion. Just curious if any of you have been on Lovinox and for what purpose?

He starts the conversation, "I have the blood results back and they're abnormal *long pause*"

"borderline" is abnormal?

Oh, and I had to pump him for the *good news* which he wouldn't have told me otherwise. Risk for carrying twins with Downs is: 1:1780. Risk for carrying twins with Tri13/18: 1:3261.

I'm on Lovenox because I had a blood clot in my leg a few years ago.  I also have a family history of clotting problems (my dad had a pretty severe case), but I had a ton of tests run at the time and don't have any of the disorders that cause clots (Protein C and S problems are a couple of them; there are a zillion others).  From what I've learned after much research due to my problem and my dad's problem, if you have issues with both Protein C and Protein S, your risk for clotting is pretty high.  At any rate, you are better safe than sorry because pregnancy is a high-risk time for clotting due to the hormones, and clots can form in the umbilical cord and cause miscarriage.  This is probably what your doctor meant, not that the miscarriages caused the protein C/S issues but vice versa.

All that said, it never hurts to get a second opinion (and let a second doctor take a glance at your lab results, too).  Good luck, and congrats on the good results on your genetic screenings!

  • Thank you. I did end up speaking with my OB and he said what you did. Yes, better safe than sorry. I can do this! (I *gulp* think) lol
  • So he tested your protein s and protein c levels during pregnancy?  Because according to the hematologist and perinatologist I saw those need to be tested when you aren't pregnant to be accurate.  Your blood is naturally hypercoagulable during pregnancy.

If you want to I'd get a second opinion from a peri and/or a hematologist (blood doc).  What amount do they have you on?  If it's 40mg once a day that is just a prophylactic dose anyway, not a therapeutic dose.  Honestly if you just want to do it you'll be fine.  I even went into labor after just having taken my aspirin and my shot and things were fine (I did have to wait 12 hours to have an epidural).

They should check your anti ten (X) A levels to see if you are getting enough Lovenox if they are really concerned.  it's a timed test you take 4-6 hours after a shot.

Anyway good luck...it sounds worse than it is.  Happy and healthy 9 months to you!
