CD's w/ yellow stains- HELP!

So I just started using my cloth diapers on DS over the last few days and I am having issues with yellow-staining from the poo.  His BM's are still very loose and very mustardy-yellow and he still goes at least 5-8 times per day.  My wash routine has been this:

(my stash so far is hemp-cotton prefolds, kissaluv fittes and snugglebottoms)

1. Remove diaper and rinse it at the toilet with toilet sprayer, saturate entire diaper, spray off all large poo particles, place in dry diaper pail.

2. Wash diapers in warm/cold with All Free and Clear and Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Bleach, no pre-rinse or soak cycle usually, although I tried a pre-soak today and let them sit for about 6 hours, with no change in staining.

What should I be doing differently?  What can I do about the yellow stains now?

  • Have you tried sunning them?  Leave them a little damp and put them in the sun.  They should come right out. I've done it with carrot stains and they're gone.

  • Sun them.

Put them in the sun (this can be a sunny window or a clotheslines) when they are fresh out of the washer and the sun will bleach the poo stains out.

  • I'll try sunning them tomorrow, it's actually nice here.  Is there something I can do before washing or during washing to prevent further staining?

  • Ditto the others- the sun will take care of any staining.

Also, is there any reason you are doing all that pre-rinsing? At this stage, his poo should be completely water soluble, and you should be able to go straight from butt to washer if you wanted to.?

If he is bf no need to even use the sprayer yet. ?Just drop in the wash. ?

COLD SOAK!! ?Warm locks in stains. ?Do it after the cold soak?

  • He is EBF, so if the poo is completely water-soluble where does that staining come from?  I was under the impression that they should come out of the wash sans stains...  are the stains normal and just something I have to accept and be prepared to sun them often?  Will drying the diaps in the dryer set the stain in so it will never come out?

Drying won't set the stains. The sun is amazing! Just wait and see.

I do a cold wash. Hot wash. Cold rinse. I've had one or two diapers come out stained, but they sunned out in no time.

The stain is from the poop, but it's still water soluable. Mine go from his bum to the dry pail.. from the dry pail to the washer.

  • I don't think the dryer will set the stain.  We had carrot stains on the suedecloth in a BG that was dried.  I just dampened it and put it in the sun. The stain was gone by the time it was dry.

This!  :)  Doing a hot wash first can def. help set in a stain :)  (Thank you Martha Stewart)

I do a cold wash first to really remove the debris, and then a hot wash.  Works great, and what it doesn't get, I sun out.

Sunning is amazing :)  And it'll work even when you can only do it every so often.  I sunned my diapers after winter and all was forgiven :)
