Baby Shower today...only two items bought off registry!

I am trying not to freak out.  It will be interesting to see what gifts I will receive.  I will be greatful for whatever I get, but just concerned with how much money we will have to spend to finish getting everything off of the registry. Damn! I sound like a brat. My bad.  But we are on such a tight budget!

Anyone else have this concern prior to your baby shower?

  • ::Jumps into 3rd Tri:: I'm like 15 weeks behind you and I worry about it too. We can't afford to buy everything (hence the registry). So it worries me that we won't get what we need

  • Don't worry. Some people don't know they're supposed to have your registry scanned. A girl at work, that just had a baby (and did the whole registry thing...), came in and told me what she was getting me and asked me to take it off the registry. I explained she could just have them scan it and she didn't know you could do that.
  • You would be surprised by how many people shop on the way to the shower.  I'm sure you'll get lots of the stuff you need!

  • When I had DS a lot of people did not go off the registry but they usually had gift reciepts attached so we were able to take back the stuff we did not want or need and exchange it for the stuff we did need.

  • I personally don't mean to sound b!tchy, but I know this is going to regardless. My husband and I have bout everything our children have, big small, and/or otherwise, with the exception of clothing and a crib. We did not expect anyone to buy these things because they are not their children, they are ours. Now, times have been more than tough in our household over the last few years, but we have always managed to get by without our kids lacking. We have one income in our house, and its not by any means a large one, the military just doesnt pay that great till you've been in awhile lol. I wish y'all the best of luck though, but please remember these are YOUR kids, and not someone elses

  • That sucks. People may stop by and shop on the way to the shower. FWIW, we only got three things from our registry and I was happy with that. We got a stroller, diaper bag and mattress off of our registry. We bought everything else.

Craigslist is great for finding deals. I bought our swing, bouncer, baby bjorn, playmat, boppy, brest friend pillow, bumbo and travel bed off of craigslist. We bought the crib, dresser, jogging stroller, infant carseat and snap n go new, but most everything else is from ebay/craigslist. Technically we could afford to get everything new, but why waste $$ when you don't have to?

Have fun at your baby shower!

  • I'm pretty sure many people shopped on the way to my shower (they had the BRU wrapping paper on the gift).  Also, a few people gave non-registry  items that were still useful and important and gave them with gift receipts.  There also were a lot of duplicates because BRU didn't take things off the registry even though the people requested it (I got three diaper genies and all three said they had the registry scanned... it was still showing up as not bought) so there may be a bit of that as well.  Finally, a few patterns I had  chosen were no longer available, so people substituted a similar pattern, but since it wasn't on the registry it did not show up as purchased.

Also, we are on a very tight budget as well (DH is in graduate school and his stipend is barely enough to make ends meet in an expensive city, but daycare costs more than I was earning) but we have always found a way to make sure DD has everything she needs.  You'll find a way, trust me.  Newborn needs are actually fairly small.  As long as you have somewhere for them to sleep and a carseat, you'll figure it out!

  • I usually shop that day of the shower, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

  • I did have the same concern, and I was right, I barely got anything off the registry. However, my family loves to give cash, and we did get a lot of that, so we were able to buy a lot of stuff with that. Anything else we have to foot the bill for on our own, but we are doing a lot of garage saleing and now all we're missing is the baby monitor and crib, which someone has promised us as hand-me downs.

  • Depending on where you are registered, there might be some hiccups in their system.  I've had issues at both Target and BRU.  Good luck!
  • Everything everyone else is saying is true, people shop on their way to the shower, people forget to take it off the registry, someties it doesnt update.

but also what a few people in my family did was they found the stuff cheaper at a different store (same exact thing) and just bought it there and had me mark it as bought after the shower...

there were also a few thing like the grooming kit, bottle dring rack and things like that that i didnt mind if they were the exact ones i got so i just marked those as bought too... some things were even better than what i had picked. good luck and have fun

  • no but my shower was a surprise - i only got one thing i had listed on my registry but loved everything i got...just relax and realize this is the way things go sometimes.  can't control it and i'm sure it will all work out.

I agree with this.  I know of a lot of people that go the day of the shower and buy off the registry.  What time is your shower??
    DD (8/12/09), DD (2/8/11)
    BFP 12/16/14| EDD 8/19/15 |MMC 1/15/15 (9 weeks 1 day)
  • my shower is in a week and there are so many things, that i consider a necessity, that arent purchased yet...i have a 10% coupon for Target so we will be using that to get everything else!!!

  • i'd just be grateful you're even getting a shower.
  • I noticed at mine a lot of people got diapers and other "little" stuff not on our registry...but we mostly got money and gift cards.  I can't tell you how nice this was compared to hulling a bunch of stuff home, plus I got to do some shopping and wasn't really stuck to one store if I didn't really want to be (some stuff on my registry I picked just because it was the only thing available at my store).

If you can't afford to buy everything, why are you having a baby? Was it an oops? I hope it was an oops.

I'm getting rather tired of irresponsible parents to be expecting family and friends to support their plan to have a baby on the Bump. I worry about the future generations....?

Maybe the guests checked your registry and bought similar items from somewhere else instead of where your registry is at.  Just a thought.

That being said, you should be grateful you are getting a shower at all.  It's not a right to have a shower, it is a gift to get one.  You should be able to provide for your child without having to rely on others to do so for you.

  • My shower is today too and there is nothing off my registry. I'm  concerned that no one will be there! Sad  oh well we'll see.
  • I can't believe so many of you are relying on other people to pay for your children. It's truly pathetic.
  • Sending un-selfish dust your way!
  • DH and I both have great families who bought our "major" items...we both have very successful parents/grandparents/aunts and uncles who LOVED buying us what we needed. My mom bought our bedding and carseat/stroller combo. Also, other family members bought us a very nice diaper bag, bassinet, and glider. They also gave lots of cash! So, our shower was super fun b/c I got to open alot of outfits and cute stuff like that. Also, I had lots of stuff I used from our DD...like the nursery furniture and outfits.

I write all this to say that although we are very blessed and got everything we needed w/out having to buy much...we never would have planned on this baby if we weren't sure we could afford it. It was great that everyone was so generous, but we also could have afforded all this ourselves. I don't know what your circumstances are, but I think it is irresponsible to plan for a baby that you can't afford.
