2nd Trimester

anyone else avoiding nuts in the 2nd tri?

my doc told me that they recommend avoiding peanuts and other nuts during the 2nd tri if an immediate family has an allergy/sensitivity. i found out my H was sensitive to peanuts for a few years so now i am off my favorite peanut butter Surprise

just wondering if anyone else was doing this.

  • Nope, I haven't heard that.
  • errm...no.

Then again, we don't have any nut allergies in the family.  So it never crossed my mind.

  • I eat almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds regularly and occaisionally peanut butter.  I was never told to avoid any of them.
  • If by "nuts" you mean crazy people, yes I'm avoiding them.

  • OMG I don't know what I'd eat.  I had almonds in my cereal this morning to up my calorie intake.  And have been through the BIG jar of PB in a month.

  • peanuts and PB everyday

no nut allergies in the fam tho

  • I am not completely off but I have cut down to only one peanut butter & jelly sandwich per week, hoping by limiting my intake, the risk of peanut allergy will decrease. My sister had peanut butter almost everyday while pregnant with my nephew and he has a sever peanut allergy.

  • it was just a suggestion from my doctor since i asked her point blank about it. i had read some stuff about the increasing number of peanut allergies recently and how it may or may not be linked to the amount of peanut butter, etc. women eat while they are pregnant. so that's what they say they suggest if you have allergies in the family. i guess it's worth a shot!
  • I was never told to avoid them. I eat some form of nut every day!

  • I never even thought about it honestly... we have no nut allergies on either side and I eat nuts/peanut butter A LOT.

  • No, but we don't have any family history of nut allergies.

I would be so sad if I couldn't eat nuts. I have been craving peanut butter like crazy since 2nd tri.

  • Mixed nuts is my biggest snack at work.  Luckily we don't have any nut allergies.

  • Hmmm...I haven't heard that or read about avoiding foods if there's someone who's allergic.  However, I don't know of any people in my immediate family who has a food allergy.
  • DS is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts. I asked both his allergist at Children's Hospital and my OB. The allergist said that there is no evidence that avoidance helps. Although they have been preaching avoidance for a while now, the incidence of peanut allergies continues to rise. The doctor said everything in moderation is fine and I should just stop eating them toward the end because of nursing. OB said it was fine to eat nuts.

If you do choose to avoid, sunbutter (made of sunflower seeds) is a pretty good substitute for peanutbutter.

  • I've been having trail mix because it's a healthy/delicious snack. But, we have no immediate family members with a sensitivity
  • Just fyi, I've also heard that it can cause asthma (not just allergies).

  • We have no history of nut or food allergies on either side, but - surprise, surprise - my ds has a peanut allergy. So, yes, I avoid peanut/nut products and will be hoping & praying that this baby is allergy-free.
