Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did you start feeding less often than every 3 hrs?

Not that I want to push it, it just takes up a LOT of your day when you're feeding 2 babies evey 3 hours.  Plus, DD is having a growth spurt and has been wanting to eat closer to every 2 hours for the past couple of days . . .

EDIT: We give them a combo of expressed breast milk and formula -- right now they're on about 3 bottles of formula a day, and the other 4 are BM.

We are still at every hour in the mornings and evenings :(
I need to break this and find a way to get her on a schedule

I think this depends on a lot of factors.  I formula feed and fed every 3 hours until 3 weeks ago when our gastroenterologist told us we could feed on demand. DD has reflux and he wanted to keep us on a schedule for a bit longer.  Those growth spurts are a pain in the a$$. DD went through one a week and a half ago and she fed almost every hour.  It was nuts.  Do you BF or FF?
  • Are you BF or FF?

We FF and still eat every 2 hrs, 3 if I'm extremely lucky. lol.

  • DS is nearly 4 months old and he still eats every 3 hours during the day.  During the night he can go for 7-8 hours without feeding though.

Sorry but my DD is 5 months old and still eating every 3 hours.  I'm hoping she'll drop at least one bottle feeding when we start feeding her two meals a day of solids.
  • DD eats every 3 hours and then goes 10-11 hours  at night without waking to eat.

We are every 3.5 hours during the day so she can get most of her meals in by 8pm.  That gives us a 50/50 chance of spleeping through the night.

  • At 4 months maybe closer to 5 I started transitioning DS to 4 hr intervals. I increased the time by 15 min each day. (Secrets of the Baby Whisperer)

  • Whoever said she needed to put her baby on a feeding schedule...I urge you to reconsider this.  Your LO is eating because she is hungry.  You can't set a schedule on that.  Mine still eats every 3 hours, and sometimes more.  I BF when I'm home and mostly formula when I am away.

Our son usually goes 3-4 hours and he is 1 month old, but he was born premature and so his habits sometimes are different.
  • DS was eating every 2 hours.  He now will sometimes go 3.

  • Jack still eats approximately every 3 hours - except at night when he'll go 10 - 11 hours without eating.  That's fairly recent too - happened naturally in the last month or so.
    Wheee!

Max is 5 months old and still eats every 3 hours.  We have introduced some solids now, so he doesn't give hunger cues as often and is starting to stretch the feedings out a little bit more.  Plus he goes from 7pm-6am without eating because he is STTN.
  • Um my 2.5 year old eats every three hours. Your baby should eat at leaast every three hours during the day at least through a year. Even when you start solids it will be every three hours. Am I missing somthing? Why would yout hink they could space it out more? DD at 2.5 gets three meals and two snacks, making it every 3 hours that she eats.
  • DD#1 was about 4 months old when she started eating every 4 hours during the day.  She was like clockwork she'd eat at 8/12/4/and 8 and then STTN til she was ready to eat at 8am again!  It was beautiful!
  • My DD is just now starting to make it to 3 hours occasionally- it used to be more like every 2-2.5. Like a pp said, you LO will probably not go more than three hours during the day until... kindergarten? I mean, I eat something probably every three hours so why shouldn't DD?

  • At around 4 1/2 months we went from 3 hour to 4 hour schedule but it did take about 3 weeks to accomplish.  He's been sttn since 6 weeks.  he is taking 7 oz every 4 hours and a dream feed at 11

Awwww! I imagine it must be hard for you. It's mostly recommended to feed your baby on demand. If they eat every 3 hours that's awesome! at 4 1/2 months my LO is between 3 -4 hours for feeding but still wakes up 2 times a night to eat. You just can't win! Hang in there girl!

DS still feeds every 3 hrs. during the day!
  • I cant imagine having to feed 2 every 3 hours, you must just feed all day long! I dont think there is much you can do though except just feed them when they are hungry. You could try slowly increasing the amount in each bottle (assuming you FF) and that might space it out to 3.5-4 hours.

Other than that, there isnt much you can do without starting them. Hang in there!

  • DD Eats about 8 Oz. Every 4 hours and sleeps through the night about 10 -11 hours.  She usually eats anywhere from 24-28 oz. a day as sometimes she has a small 4 oz bottle aroun 9 pm before she goes down for the night.

    She is fed EBM

I would love it if DD would eat every 3 hours. She's still eating every 2.  I knoww it must be tough with twins though. Hang in there!

  • Ds still eats roughly every three hours (except overnight).  It doesn't take as much time though. He'll usually eat his bottle in 15-20 minutes.

  • My baby still nurses every three to four hours, and she's ten months old. She also eats three meals of solid food a day and two snacks. However, the nursing sessions take less than ten minutes, and she sleeps through the night from 7PM until 7 or 8AM.
