Trying to Get Pregnant

Cost of birth??

Hey ladies,

Here is the town where we live, we only have one small hospital. The cost of having a baby there is around 25 000. It is a pretty ghetto hospital too.

Any one else look into the price yet?

  • Walmart insurance, it's not the best.
  • Ours should be about 2k (based on a coworkers recent baby).?

    What is walmart insurance?

I can't imagine being insured and still having to pay 25000k out of pocket. That can't be right.

  • They pay the first 500, then I pay 2000 then they pay the nest 80% up to 8000-10000. It's pretty lame. Does anyone else  know what your hospital charges??
  • My out of pocket max is $880 every year.  That is what I paid when I had DD.  I am very thankful that I have great insurance.

  • Mine should be around $500 after insurance.

Do you mean you work for wal-mart? I'm confused. No one can tell you how much your birth will be, it depends on your insurance. Mine is completely covered
  • Does anyone get insurance (not through their work) that they really like and would recommend? My insurance plans have recently somewhat fallen through as well. :( It is pretty important to have when having a baby....

This. The cost without insurance is definitely a scary thing!

Yes, sorry, I work for WM, part time. I edited my post above to explain how my insurance works.

  • Our insurance covers 100% of prenatal care, birth and hospital stay.

    Sweet insurance!

  • I'm lucky with Tricare. It covers virtually all of the prenatal care, birth, hospital stay, any complications...etc. I don't have to pay for it since it's through the Army. Unfortunatly, we only get one u/s. If that's the worst of our complaints, I guess we're doing alright.

  • I know the hospital bill for my cousin's C-section was somewhere around $50K. Insurance covered it, but still.... that is a scary number! My annual max is $1500 but I think a birth falls under a special category where I'd only need to pay the deductible ($200).

  • we have a 250$ per day copay up to 750$, for the hospital

  • Birth is covered 100% under my plan.

But, the hospital accidentally filed my insurance incorrectly when I had my laparoscopy and I got a bill for 12K.  If it costs that much to have a little 2 hour laser surgery, I would hate to think what a birth/c-section would cost without insurance.

Can you work more than part time?  This costs burden would be a big concern if it were me.

wow thats terrible. Does your husband have better insurance that you could get on? Do you really have that much money put away for the birth alone?

  • 25K seems really high. we live in RI and i had a c-section and was induced for 24 hours and my total bill was 12K. we had to pay 250. gl
  • $4k out of year pocket max for family ... we will pay that.
  • 25000 for a complication birth seems so high. I think I will have to shop around for other hospitals. Would you pick a hospital 1hr away??
  • complication free

No, it sounds about right.  That is what everyone is telling you - it is really expensive to have a baby.  Even if it is a complication-free, run of the mill birth.

  • we're paying about $2000 out of pocket - with insurance

Your baby picture is so cute!

  • Have you considered getting some kind of supplemental insurance? It might be worth a little extra money a month to know that you were actually well covered for the costs of having a baby.

This.  Some of my DH's co-workers said they only paid like $20 and the rest was covered.  Pretty nice...

  •  I asked my SIL about this b/c she just bad a baby & she said she paid $1,500 to her OB for the delivery and $1,000 for the hospital stay. This was all after her 1,000 deductible.
  • My uncomplicated vaginal delivery was $16000 which is average. I would drive an hour to the hospital to save 10,000 for sure, that is alot of cash although your insurance sounds a lot like mine, what is your max out of pocket?
  • My insurance is amazing...

We will pay 190 up front before 26 weeks.  They will pay 90%, we pay 10%. Our deductible is $300 which we have already reached with u/s and bloodwork.  Basically they expect the birth to cost us less than $400.  I am in love.  :)

BTW...I have Anthem blue cross blue shield.

  • My DH and I are just now TTC and the thought of having to pay $25,000 would definitely make me think twice about having a baby.  Thank God we have decent health coverage.
  • I'm in NZ, giving birth is free. Insurance or not. No matter how complicated it gets and what kind of emergency or specialist care you might need.

  • One idea is to shop around for your doctor. ?If you tell them up front you will be paying cash, they will usually make some sort of deal regarding the costs. ?A complication free birth near me with all dr appts run around 12k after negotiations. ?C-section, a bit more. ?I am self-employed and maternity insurance is costly (330 a month) and they usually make you wait 1 year before covering any maternity costs. ?I have a 2500 deductible and then they pay 80% of the first 5000 and then 100%. ?So, most out of pocket will be 8500. ?That is with insurance!! ?We considered just paying cash and then adding a special insurance you can buy after being pregnant for complications but I just went ahead and got the maternity. ?So frustrating!!
