1st Trimester

Type 2 Diabetic with 1st Pregnancy

Hi all.  I just found out that I am pregnant with our first child a week ago (after ttc for 3 1/2 years).  I am 6 weeks along and both my husband and I are thrilled.  However, from the second I got a positive pregnancy test, I have been worried about everything that could happen in my pregnancy.  I especially worry because I have been a Type 2 Diabetic for just over two years.  Is there anyone else reading this that was/is a diabetic pre-pregnancy that could offer advice about how to deal with it?  While my blood sugars have been well controlled for the past 6 months, I still worry about the complications that I could encounter as a diabetic.

  • I am in the EXACT same boat as you but cannot offer any advice. I am also a type 2 diabetic (I take avandamet and metformin) for almost 2 years now and my sugars are very controlled. ?In fact, I knew I was pregnant from one day of completely OUT OF CONTROL sugars (like from 50 to 250 then back to 75.... I was literally in tears!) ?But thankfully that was only for a day or two, and then went back to normal for me.

I am very nervous with how the pregnancy is going to effect my sugars, and was told at one point that I'd probably have to take insulin during my pregnancy... which is not something I'd like to do. ?But if it is what I have to do for my baby, then I will do it!

I am about 7 weeks along (just found out for sure yesterday!) and making an appt tomorrow to see a high-risk ob. ?Good luck with everything and please feel free to email me if you want to talk. ?I don't have any answers, but at least we can relate to each other. ?Crystalviolet5@aol.com ?

  • your sugars will be harder to control and you may need insulin. Just carefully monitor and you may need a high risk OB. Concentrate on not gaining too much weight and after the baby is born try to be mindful of weight.  Sometimes losing weight can make the diabetes go away so good luck to you! (losing weight only after the baby not during)
  • A friend of mine has Type 1 Diabetes (I know, incredibly different from Type 2) but she's had a perfectly normal pregnancy by watching very carefully her blood sugar levels and adjusting her diet and exercise as needed based on those numbers. She also is considering high risk so she's seen a couple different specialists for her entire pregnancy. Its a lot of Dr appointments, and quite annoying to constantly think about what youre eating, but the result has been well worth the effort for her. Best of luck to you!!

  • Thanks so much!  Same to you!
  • I really appreciate all the support.  I am currently on 2 different kinds of insulin (I started the second last Thursday after meeting with doctors) and metformin.  I'm am just hoping and praying that all will go well and complications will be minimal if any.  (Can you tell that this is my first pregnancy and I'm scared half to death?)
