10 day old: How much poop is too much poop?

Since we got home from hospital 5 days ago, DC, who is only 10 days ond now, produces anywhere from 12-16 poop diapers a day. Is there a # of poop diapers that one should be concerned about?  It's mustardy-seedy/flaky poop....and his butt is SO irritated...We use desitin and water on a wash cloth instead of wipes until things clear up.  I am nursing him, but suppliment every few days with formula when he seems raviniouis....could it be something I am eating?

  • The poo sounds normal. Is there a reason you are supplementing? The poo will go down in a couple of weeks...we had a diaper sometimes 2 with every feeding (EBF) at first...now it's about 4 diapers a day (poo that is, not wet) Wet we have about 8-10 a day still.

  • That sounds about right. I remember at first DS had a poopy diaper at every change! It should calm down some in the next few weeks, until then keep doing what you're doing :)

Please do not supplement when your DS seems ravenous. He is building up your supply. If you take him away from the breast...you are only hurting your supply for him and you may put yourself in a situation where you'll HAVE to supplement because you don't have enough for him. These first weeks are very critical for your supply. Let him nurse as often and as long as he wants...that is, if you're really wanting to stay with BFing. If not..then it doesn't matter.

  • There is nothing wrong with supplementing if that's what you want to do but be aware that it will have a negative effect on your supply - when he seems ravenous that is him trying to boost your supply, telling your body 'make more milk!' - the more you keep him on the breast during those times the better your own supply will meet his needs - and you won't need to supplement.  Lots of poop is normal for now!
    Wheee!

Thank you...I was trying to say this and hope I wasn't portraying that formula was bad. I was trying to get the point across that if she wants to EBF...supplementing is only going to hinder that.

  • I totally get what people are saying...(I am not taking it in a bad way...and common sense just says that this is what he is trying to do..) I was just needing a break and took the easy way out (just being honest!)

I'm gonna pump and hunker down the rest of the day for lots of feedings.  I just feel like a dairy farm....i don't remember this when I nursed my 1st DC.

Ah....it's all coming back to me now! Life was easier with just one.  No one to entertain and run after! :)

    Wish me luck!

  • At that age DD was pooping everytime she ate--so about 12-14 times a day.  If you're worried about diaper rash try some naked time (sit him on the couch with you with an open diaper under him and a towel underneath) and liberal amounts of cornstarch on his tush.  Believe me, it works wonders!
  • Good luck! Stick with it and all will be fine...as I'm sure you remember! Just use the Lasinoh (sp?) after every feeding...that prevented me from having cracked nips.

And this nursing around the clock thing doesn't last long! Remember..it's temporary!

I know this seems so hard to do and you are probably sore but she's so right. I got stuck in this trap and you don't want to have to supplement at every feeding in a few weeks.  Good luck!  Oh, and the # of poopy diapers - toally normal.
