Anyone give up on Breastfeeding?

I have been trying to breastfeed since the begining but the first week I was so sore and was bleeding. Then I had a LC come and things got better but yesterday I got a super high fever and chills and found out I have a breast infection so I have to take antibiotics and pump and dump. I want to continue but I don't know if it is worth it if it is making me this miserable and sick. Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone give up on Breastfeeding?

  • Do you have mastitis?  Because I thought you could continue to nurse with that.  How old is your LO?  BFing was really hard for me for the first 6 weeks and then gradually got better.  I actually enjoy it now.

  • It took about 6-7 weeks for it to become tolerable for me.  If you hang in there it's really worth it, but I could never judge anyone for quitting because I hated every second of it for a long time.

  • Its really hard and first, but gets much easier. I love it now, and think its way more convenient than FF

  • I was told that if I got an infection I could still bf with my antibiotic.  Maybe you can get on a different one that you can still bf?

I agree with pp, it's so true-your lo is only 2 1/2 weeks old, and it's very hard to bf at that point.  We're six weeks in and even with sucking and weight gain and supply issues, it's considerably easier.  I don't love it yet, but it's not painful (a little uncomfortable) anymore.  I'm still nursing, pumping and bottle feeding, so it's a little tedious, but so much easier.  And I've been told well worth it.

However, if you're miserable, then you need to do what is best for you and your baby.  your baby doesn't need a miserable mom.

  • I have had a relatively easy time BFing, but a girlfriend of mine had a really rough start--mastitis, poor latch, milk blisters, low supply, you name it!--but she stuck with it and now it's going much better and she's glad she stuck it out.
I would encourage you to keep trying if it's important to you.  I feel like it's kept DS from getting sick and there are a ton of other health benefits, and the bonding is awesome.  Love it!
  • Thank you I need te encouragement. I had a 102 fever last night and thought this is not worth it if I can't even take care of my baby but DH stepped in for the night. I'm glad to here it gets better.
