2nd Trimester

PSA: Do not get a drastic haircut when pregnant

Do not sit in a stylist's chair asking for something drastically different than what you are used to. It is the hormones speaking. You will regret it.

During my first trimester I was in the process of growing out my hair for Locks of Love. I naturally have very thick hair and the pregnancy hormones made the even more thick hair impossible to manage.

Once my hair was long enough I went to a different than my usual hair stylist to cut it for the organization and then to thin it out some because the thickness was really driving me crazy at that point.

I obviously overstated the need to thin my hair. I now have the worst layers in the world - some are two inches from my scalp. It has been three months since the haircut and I am discovering all new ways it is a horrible cut. The great news is that over time it will grow out, but for now I am stuck with it.

Re: PSA: Do not get a drastic haircut when pregnant

  • I have been growing mine out too. I have always had shorter hair, but I look better with longer. I have been tempted so many times to go chop it all off and get a sassy little number, but even my stylist wont touch my hair. :) DH says if I cut it he wont speak to me for a month. It never fails that when I cut my hair WITHOUT the extra hormones, I cry. I can't imagine how I would be WITH the hormones!

  • I'm sorry you don't like your hair. I went to my hairdresser a couple of weeks ago and asked her to cut my hair short. She said it was my pregnancy hormones talking and refused....I'm so glad she wouldn't do it. Apparently it is a very common occurrence.
  • The last time I went to get my hair done, my stylist told me this exact same thing!  At least if I go in there asking for something drastic, she will know better, lol.

  • I'm the opposite. My hair has been super short for a few years now. Last time I tried to grow it out, I made it 8 months and only managed to look like a chia pet.

Last week I asked my stylist if I should try to grow it out again. She told me that was the hormones talking and cut it cute and short again.

  • as a stylist #1 i am sorry you had this happen no one when thinning hair should cut into the scalp area yikes. also when i have a pregnant woman in my chair i always know to ask lots of questions to see if that is what she really wants because i know most of the time its the hormones. and this reminds me of just that. is there anything else wrong with it other than that do you like it.
  • Aww... I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.

For my first, I had my hair loped off right at my ponytail (and sent it off to Locks for Love still in it!) and didn't regret it.

I'm probably going to have it cut down to a couple of inches again soon... it's not long enough to donate, but my first guy keeps tearing my hair out! I think it's more wanting to not be scalped by a 5 month old, than the hormones talking, for me. ;)

  • aww?fauxbunny you son is so sweet aww cute cute
  • Thank you. :) Even though right now he's squealing like a pig in his bouncer, not so cute. Hahaha. :)
  • What a great thing you did though - I hate you walked away w/ a bad haircut after donating your hair. Ironic post b/c I am off to get my haircut this morning. Mine is growing like a weed - more than halfway down my back. I am only going to get 2 inches off though.
  • My hairstylist won't let me do anything crazy to my hair. She was pregnant last year and did something she regretted, so now she refuses to drastically alter any pregnant lady's hair, she knows it's the hormones.

I normally pull my hair back - but because the layers are so short I can't. My options for dealing with my hair are really limited.  I just keep telling myself -"it will grow back!"

  • Where in CO are you located? If you don't mind me asking? I am in Western CO, and thought I would recommend my stylist. She listens and usually has some good ideas/suggestions about situations of this sort. I am sorry they cut it so short. I bet it will grow fast with all the hormones!
  • I completely agree with not doing anything drastic with your hair while pregnant! When i was pregnant with my DD, I had long hair and decided it was time to cut it all off and donate it to Locks of Love. It was essentially the same style, just 11 1/2 inches shorter. I hated it and i cried my eyes out when i got home! I couldn't pull it back and had to "re train" it so to speak! I did this in my first tri, so i don't think my hair stylist knew i was pg yet.....i am pretty sure she wouldn't have cut it if she knew I was! Oh, well.....live and learn because it grows back.
  • Thanks for the warning. I've always loved my long hair, as does my DH, but hormones are tricky ;)

That is a very touching thing you did, though. How thoughtful of you!

  • I haven't had bangs in 10 years but decided on a whim in January I wanted bangs. Not a lot of bangs, but just a little bit of the fringy kind. However, the last time I asked for this (10 years ago) I ended up with a horrible pile of thick, unruly bangs. Luckily, this time they came out perfect. My husband didn't understand why all of the sudden I decided to do it. Little did we know I was 4 weeks pregnant at the time!

I told my stylist when I was back for a trim and she told me wouldn't cut it short this summer even if I asked because it gets so hot here I have to be able to pull it all up.

  • It's funny you're mentioning this, because my PG co-worker got a drastic haircut this week and I find it soooo hideous I can hardly look her in the eye without laughing. I feel bad, though, because it's so drastic there's no way I can even pretend I haven't noticed... and yet that's exactly what I've been doing. Shame on me.
