2nd Trimester

Baby tasting what I taste...

So I've read that the amniotic fluid changes "flavor" based on what you eat. When do you think this happens...time wise (not weeks)? I noticed today that the baby would be completely still and then every time I ate (or drank my smoothie) about 20 mins later, the baby was kicking for quite a bit and then would go back to relaxing (no kicks). Think this was from what I was eating or just coincidence? Food takes about 20 mins to digest right, so would it be the same for it to "flavor" the amniotic fluid (that sounds gross!)??

Re: Baby tasting what I taste...

  • I have heard 30 mins for the food to get to baby
  • Loading the player...
  • I was wondering the same thing!  I've noticed a pattern that he's more active after I eat (and it's not gas).  Now that I know he can taste things I've definately been adding more fruits and veggies.
  • I could be very wrong, but none the less I'll give it a stab.

I think that while the fluid's flavor may change, I don't think that's the reason for the increase of activity.  I would say that because you're digesting the food that s/he getting the increase in sugar...which is making the baby more active.

But I really don't know...it's just my guess.

  • Typically the baby moves anyway 15-30 minutes after you eat or drink so it could just be that?  Especially b/c a smoothie has a lot of sweets, etc. that will get'em going ;)

Today was a little different because he usually doesn't move after I eat. His schedule is all day long at work up until lunch (not after) and then not really again until I lay down in bed.

Besides my smoothie, everything else I ate was spicy.....sandwich with jalapenos, flamin hot cheetos and last night when he moved soon after dinner it was tacos loaded with spicy, spicy homemade salsa - nothing sugary.

  • your amniotic fluid should be refreshing itself every hour, kinda like draining out a bathtub and filling it up again. I know fruit makes my little one kick and so do cold things like smoothies/ice cream.
  • I feel more kicks after I eat certain foods. Anything sweet, I get kicks within 10-15 minutes. We ordered Chinese food last night and there was massive kicking before I was even done eating. I read that about the fluid last night too so maybe I am right when I say "Baby likes Chinese food!" :)

  • Shoot, I know I read about it recently in my Pregnancy Week by Week book, but I can't remember exactly when it was. After 20 weeks though.

And my kid went absolutely bonkers after I ate Twizzlers. It was hilarious.

  • Our baby seems to love Cheese. :)
